I have 6 different Linux versions, all on different partitions, and one boot partition to hold the kernel images and grub. On some systems this works great, I get the boot menu and I can grub loading error 17 pick the linux distro. But on 2 systems I keep getting error 17 (and nothing else onscreen). I've confirmed the partition table ordering is correct, the partition table is valid, no errors on boot partition, etc. I've also reinstalled GRUB onto the MBR several times. Can someone explain why this is happening, and what I can do to fix? grub-legacy share|improve this question edited Dec 30 '13 at 17:35 derobert 44.6k689143 asked Oct 2 '13 at 2:57 TSG 1857 migrated from serverfault.com Oct 2 '13 at 3:02 This question came from our site for system and network administrators. add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote What I've noticed is that some BIOS releases designate USB sticks as disks and initialize them after harddrives in the same system. This causes your grub config to look for the partitions on the wrong drive. I would recommend trying syslinux instead, it is much more capable of running on removable storage. Here's a link explaining how to use syslinux for this purpose: http://superuser.com/questions/584625/multiboot-on-usb-with-syslinux I'm afraid I don't have a solution for fixing grub though, sorry. share|improve this answer edited Oct 2 '13 at 7:42 Anthon 47.4k1462125 answered Oct 2 '13 at 7:24 madeddie

On boot, I get the infamous "Error 17" after "GRUB loading stage 1.5". I know that this somehow means that GRUB can't find the root/boot partition, but I don't know how to fix it. This is how my partitions are set up: sda1 Windows FAT32 sda2 Extended Partition sda5 Linux ext4 sda6 Linux swap sda7 Windows Data FAT32 sda8 Windows Data FAT16 Note that there is no sda3 or sda4. Why, I have no idea. (Maybe those are reserved for primary partitions?) Compared to the previous Xubuntu install, the installer decided to switch the positions of the Linux and Swap partitions. So /dev/sda5 would have to be it. I found several hints how to fix GRUB, but they seem contraditory to me. Most refer to something like this: sudo grub grub>root (hd0,0) grub>setup (hd0) grub>quit I simply don't know how "sda5" translates to "hd0,x", given the extended partition and the strange numbering of partitions sda1-sda8. OTOH, I read somewhere that this procedure is for an old version of grub, so it might be wrong in the first place. Another thing I'm not sure about is whether maybe what I'm seeing might be remnants of the old GRUB instal

I used dd to put the latest .img file on https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=93292 my usb key and booted form it. How did I break it? I remember feeling happy about wubi. Now I feel bad about wubi and everything that I did. I used the partition editor within Windows (System Tools - administration) and removed my 11 GB partition of ubuntu. This was how my laptop has been partitioned EVER since I dual booted it three or so years ago. Now. This is what my LCD says:
GRUB 1.5 Loading GRUB Error 17I shall fix my laptop next weekend, when I have time. I actually don't know if I should fix the CD, or try booting from a USB (Damn small linux on USB seems to run then it went blank as well), or get the hard drive swapped out, install linux through a computer which has a working CD Drive, re-insert it into the computer. Any suggestions? I want the easiest answers. linux laptop grub ubuntu-8.04 wubi share|improve this question asked Oct 29 '08 at 3:29 colemakker migrated from stackoverflow.com Sep 8 '12 at 9:59 This question came from our site for professional and enthusiast programmers. add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 2 do
