I then used a login ID that exists in SQL. When I test the connection it works. But when I call it from Access, it reverts back to using sql server error 18456 severity 14 state 5 the user's Windows Authentication. After clicking OK, a message box appears for connecting to sql. It shows the user ID set up in ODBC with no password. If I uncheck the box and enter the password, it then works... I'm stumped. I don't understand why it is trying to use Windows Authentication. We are running XP professional, Office 2007 and SQL Server 2005. In your case, we need to un-check the option, type the password and press OK to select link tables. In the Link Tables dialog box , we can click the Save Password check box to store the connection information. I am now trying to create an ODBC Data Source. I am using "With SQL Server authentication using a login ID and password entered by the user" and have entered my Login and password. The Login http://dba.stackexchange.com/questions/29992/odbc-data-source-sql-server-connection-login-failed-for-user is visible in SQL Server Management Studio under Security-> Logins. The login also contains the exact properties of the same login in my old server. When I hit next after entering the username and password I get: Connection failed: SQLState: '28000' SQL Server Error: 18456 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'myUser'. After reading this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555332 I realized that the server properties were set to "Windows Authentication Mode" only, but even after changing to "SQL Server and Windows Authentication Mode" I am still having problems connecting. I can connect with my Windows account though. sql-server-2008 sql-server-2005 odbc logins share|improve this question edited Dec 7 '12 at 18:08 asked Dec 7 '12 at 16:11 jpsnow72 246139 Just a note. When you change the Server Authentication from Windows Authentication to Mixed Mode. You'll need to manually enable the SA login if you want it available. Personally I would keep it disabled in your case since you have access through your Windows acount. –Brandon leach Dec 7 '12 at 23:04 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 9 down vote accepted My answer... From my comments: The issue was that the server was set to "Windows Authentication Mode" only. To fix this I Right click the server - > Properties Click "Security" in the left side of the

Join them; it only takes a minute: Sign up SQL Server login works in a connection string, but fails in DSN up vote 1 down vote favorite I have a web error 18456 site and I'm trying to setup a DSN instead of using a connection string because it seems more secure. The following connection string works fine in my site: "Server=servername; database=mydb; user id= web.account; password=PassW0rd!; Integrated Security=SSPI" However, when I try to set up a DSN (using the 64-bit odbc admin) I get the following error: Connection failed: SQLState: '28000' SQL Server Error: 18456 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'web.account' Keep in mind, sql server error I'm using the same account and password I use in the connection string (which works). It's weird too because the error occurs right after I click 'Next' on the "How should SQL Server verify the authenticity of the login ID?" page. It seems like the odbc admin does not even try to connect to the server to verify the credentials. What can I check to prove this / How can I fix this? Things I've tried: I have checked the server authentication mode, as proposed in other solutions, and that is set to "SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode", as it should be. I have tried creating both a User and System DSN - both get the same error, this seems like further evidence that it's not trying to connect to the server to check the credentials. I have tried the same DSN creation on multiple servers, all have the same problem. Is it possible the SQL Server is refusing these types of connections? UPDATE 1: The DBA just told me that the web.account is actually a Windows account, not an SQL account. I guess that's why the odbc isn't working, because it doesn't try to connect as a different windows user, only as the current windows user. So now the question is, how do I set up a DSN wi

Solved SQL State 28000 - Error 18456 Logon Failed For User Posted on 2007-06-26 MS SQL Server 1 Verified Solution 15 Comments 43,330 Views Last Modified: 2010-02-16 I have a SQL database (SQL 2000) that has an Access2000 front end to it. Everything works ok for me, but for others it is not. When they click on the table or the report, they get "Connection Failed - SQLState: "28000" SQL Server Error 18456. Login failed for user...." I have read the previous posts on this error and have tried most of them. I am missing something. Under the ODBC connection on the client, I have the User DSN and System DSN set up for both of the databases on the SQL server. I also have the Access database set up under User DSN. The user is set up as a user on the server where the SQL database resides, with the same permissions that I have. Under the database in Enterprise Manager, the user is set up under "Logins". I have not deleted all of the table links and the ODBC connection, I'm not sure how to do this. The user is able to get into the Access program by unchecking Trusted Connection and typing in her password, but this is a pain. How do I get this to be automatic. I have compared my settings to hers and they seem the same. 0 Question by:sfrisk Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google LVL 14 Best Solution bytwoboats No problem.
