not recognized by the BIOS in the system. From info:/grub/Stage2 errors ..... you can use Konqueror to see all the error messages by entering that in the location bar.I would suggest checking the cables .... power and data going to the disk ..... pull them and reseat them with the power unplugged. Then try to boot again. I have received excellent help from Tommcd on an attempt to migrate Ubuntu, existing by itself on an IDE disk,to a multiboot arrangement on a new SATA disk. That process can be viewed here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...66#post6635866 I realize that this post constitutes a cross-post in part, but the current error results from attempting to reinstall GRUB, what I thought would be the simplest step. After reinstalling GRUB (I used the "sudo grub; find /boot/grub/stage1; root (hd0,5); setup (hd0)" routine) I rebooted after the process appeared to proceed w/o error. Upon finding the GRUB boot list I selected 8.04 Ubuntu and was greeted by the intractable (for me) "error 21: selected disk does not exist". I found on other forum replies that a problem seems to exist when migrating to SATA disks, or something. Anyway, I then tried installing 8.10 from the Live CD and nearly made perilous changes to the size of my main Windows partition. I quit the ins

The drives on live CD are https://iansramblings.wordpress.com/2011/11/21/grub-error-21-selected-disk-does-not-exist/ sda, sdb (the USB stick) and sdcI'm installing Grub boot to sdc of courseIt seems to go wrong already in menu.lst where # device name conversions says /dev/fd0 (fd0) /dev/sda (hd0) /dev/sdb2 (hd1,1) /dev/sda3 (hd0,2)and the default (0) boot says root (hd0,2)After booting the error I get isroot (hd2,0)Error 21: Selected disk does not existA little error 21 strange I find is that the /boot/grub/device.map file is missing on the SD drive. Even stranger is that the /dev folder is almost empty, shouldn't it be auto-created by the installer? How can I debug this? might run into this problem as I have just done when installing CentOS 6. When you first re-boot to go back into Windows and select "Other" from the Grub loader menu you are presented with "Error 21: Selected disk does not exist". Almost as uninformative as it is annoying, but it can be fixed at least in my case by the following: - Log into Linux, and run the following as root: - vi /boot/grub/menu.lst You'll see something like: - # grub.conf generated by anaconda # # Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file # NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that # all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg. # root (hd0,0) # kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 # initrd /initrd-version.img #boot=/dev/hda default=0 timeout=5 splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz hiddenmenu title CentOS (2.6.18-53.1.4.el5) root (hd0,1) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-53.1.4.el5 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet initrd /initrd-2.6.18-53.1.4.el5.img title other rootnoverify (hd1,4) chainloader+1 What I had to do was change the last (hd1,4) to (hd0,0) then I changed the title to Windows instead of other. I also set the default to 1 so it defaults to windows and increased the timeout to 20.
