Started out by de-fragmenting and repairing any bad sectors on my computers hard drive. Originally I tried to use an Unbuntu 8.10 live disc that I got from a magazine, however it wouldn't load either as a live disc or full install. It kept giving me the message; Busybox V1.10.2 (unbuntu 1.1:10.2-1unbuntu6) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) I created further live discs for Kunbuntu8:10, Xunbuntu8:10, Xunbuntu8:1 Alternate, the alternate version couldn't find my CD driver and the Kunbuntu8:10 & Xunbuntu8:10 gave the same message as above 'Busybox etc'. At one point I tried the third option on the live disc about 'help to boot on start up' from this point on every time I start up I get the choice of Windows XP Home edition or Unbuntu (only windows works, Unbuntu gives an error message about 'Busybox etc' as above. After reading one of this forums thread's about 8.04 working while 8.10 did not for someone, I created an Unbuntu 8.04 LT live disc. Installed Unbuntu 8.04 LT after giving the 'try it out without changing your settings' option a go from with in the live disc. All my hard ware seams to work, wireless network, DVD players, files etc. The Unbuntu installer chose to load onto an USB hard drive, I assigned a
install to an external USB hard drive. This person already had Debian Linux installed on their local hard drive and was attempting to do http://www.pendrivelinux.com/grub-error-21-after-full-install-to-usb-hard-drive/ an install of Ubuntu to an external USB hard drive. During the Ubuntu USB https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/8978 hard drive installation process, Grub was accidently moved from the internal hard drive to their external hard drive, rendering the original Linux system unbootable without the external drive plugged in. When attempting to boot from the original Debian Linux system, they would encounter the Grub Error 21 shortly after the Grub 1.5 boot process. The good error 21 news is that the fix to repair Grub on the original system was quite simple and is illustrated below: Reinstalling or fixing Grub after error 21: Boot into the original Linux system with the external hard drive still installed (or you can boot from a Live Ubuntu CD). Open up a terminal and type sudo su Type fdisk -l and locate your Linux boot partition from the list Example: grub 1.5 error sda1 or hda1 Type grub-install /dev/sdx or grub-install /dev/hdx to reinstall or repair Grub! Reboot and test! Error 21 " Error 21 means : " 21 : Selected disk does not exist This error is returned if the device part of a device- or full file name refers to a disk or BIOS device that is not present or not recognized by the BIOS in the system. " My motherboard is a ABIT KR7A-RAID with a Highpoint hpt372 controller for RAID (This motherboard has two normal IDE and two IDE for RAID). This error is returned when my HDD in plugged on a "RAID" IDE. (By the way, I don't use RAID, it's a single disk). Ubuntu installation works if I plug my HDD on a normal IDE. I encounter no problem when I install Fedora Core 2 with my HDD plugged on a "RAID" IDE (and with GRUB) (so I don't think it's a BIOS problem). It is a Soyo KT400 Dragon Ultra motherboard also with a Highpoint 372 IDE raid controller. I also have only a single drive plugged into the controller and this is the first time I have seen an Error 21 from Grub. I have run various other distros including Fedora and Gentoo without i
