Favorite Rating: Error 21 in grub during the upgrade to newer SLES 11 (SPx)This document (7014290) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document. Environment SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 3SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 2SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Situation Server was converted from running as a "physical server" to http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f64/solved-how-to-fix-grub-error-21-a-326625.html running as a "virtual machine" running on VMware infrastructure. The conversion was made by using VMware vCenter Converter.SymptomsDuring the upgrade process from a previous OS version (i.e. SLES 10 SP4, or older SLES 11 SP) to a newer version of SLES 11, an error is encountered when the grub bootloader is installed. The https://www.novell.com/support/kb/doc.php?id=7014290 relevant text of the error is similar to:grub> install --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 (hd0,0)/boot/grub/stage1 d (hd0) (hd0,0)/boot/grub/stage2 0x8000 (hd0,0)/boot/grub/menu.lstError 21: Selected disk does not existgrub> quitIf using a graphical install, you may see the following: Resolution Revert the VM back to the snapshot before applying the update/installation.Modify the /boot/grub/device.map to point to the proper disk/partition. Ideally, you will want to use either:/dev/disk/by-idor/dev/disk/by-uuidReboot and run the upgrade again. Cause After conversion to a virtual machine, the /boot/grub/device.map file no longer points to a proper device. Additional Information When the server is on physical hardware, the /boot/grub/device.map file may incorporate the driver name in the device. In our example it read like:(hd0) /dev/disk/by-id/cciss-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx(hd1) /dev/disk/by-id/cciss-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxAfter being converted to a virtual server, the old name will only work as long as grub isn't modified -- which occurs when upgrading to a new OS version or service pack. Therefore, in order to avoid this error, use the appropriate entry in /dev for your device. Tr
install to an external USB hard drive. This person already had Debian Linux installed on their local hard drive and was attempting to do an install of Ubuntu to an external USB hard drive. http://www.pendrivelinux.com/grub-error-21-after-full-install-to-usb-hard-drive/ During the Ubuntu USB hard drive installation process, Grub was accidently moved from the internal hard drive to their external hard drive, rendering the original Linux system unbootable without the external drive plugged in. When attempting to boot from the original Debian Linux system, they would encounter the Grub Error 21 shortly after the Grub 1.5 boot process. The good news is that the fix to repair Grub on the original system was quite simple and is illustrated below: error 21 Reinstalling or fixing Grub after error 21: Boot into the original Linux system with the external hard drive still installed (or you can boot from a Live Ubuntu CD). Open up a terminal and type sudo su Type fdisk -l and locate your Linux boot partition from the list Example: sda1 or hda1 Type grub-install /dev/sdx or grub-install /dev/hdx to reinstall or repair Grub! Reboot and test! Notes: x represents the drive letter a, b, c, d etc. Replace grub error 21 with your actual drive letter. sdx= SATA, SCSI or USB devices hdx= IDE devices Similar Portable Linux Posts:Pendrivelinux V1 install to a portable USB hard driveInstalling Ubuntu 7.04 to a USB Hard DriveCoLinux Portable Ubuntu for Windows Grub Error 21 after full install to USB hard drive published under Using and Configuring Linux debian linux system, error 21, external hard drive, external usb hard drive, fixing grub, grub, grub install, usb hard drive, USB Ubuntu Portable Linux Categories Flash drive installs using Live CD Flash drive installs using Windows USB Virtual Machine Emulation Using and Configuring Linux Pendrive Linux Posts Make a USB Boot CD for Ubuntu 11.10 Boot DOS from USB - RUFUS LiveUSB Install - Live USB Creator XBOOT - Multiboot ISO USB Creator (Windows) YUMI - Multiboot USB Creator SARDU - Multiboot USB Creator (Windows) Boot Multiple ISO from USB via Grub2 using Linux Creating a Kubuntu Live USB from CD Creating an Xubuntu Live USB from CD Creating an Ubuntu Live USB from CD Using UNetbootin to create a Linux USB from Linux MultiSystem - Create a MultiBoot USB from Linux Put Mandriva 2010 on a USB Flash Drive (Windows) Put Bitdefender Rescue CD on a USB Flash Drive Put Lucid Puppy on USB Flash Drive from Windows USB Linux Help USB Boot compatibility test USB Help and Tools Boot Cheatcodes BIOS USB Boot Options Restoring your USB Key ©2006-2016 P
