Grub Loading Error 21
1SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Situation Server was converted from running as a "physical server" to running as a "virtual machine" running on VMware infrastructure. The conversion was made by

using VMware vCenter Converter.SymptomsDuring the upgrade process from a previous OS version (i.e. SLES 10 SP4, or older SLES 11 SP) to a newer version of SLES 11, an error is encountered when the grub bootloader is installed. The relevant text of the error is similar to:grub> install --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 (hd0,0)/boot/grub/stage1 d (hd0) (hd0,0)/boot/grub/stage2 0x8000 (hd0,0)/boot/grub/menu.lstError 21: Selected disk does not existgrub> quitIf using a graphical install, you may see the following: Resolution Revert the VM back to the snapshot before applying the update/installation.Modify the /boot/grub/device.map to point to the proper disk/partition. Ideally, you will want to use either:/dev/disk/by-idor/dev/disk/by-uuidReboot and run the upgrade again. Cause After conversion to a virtual machine, the /boot/grub/device.map file no longer points to a proper device. Additional Information When the server is on physical hardware, the /boot/grub/device.map file may incorporate the driver name in the device. In our example it read like:(hd0) /dev/disk/by-id/cciss-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx(hd1) /dev/disk/by-id/cciss-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxAfter being converted to a virtual server, the old name will only work as long as grub isn't modified -- which occurs when upgrading to a new OS version or service pack. Therefore, in order to avoid this error, use the appropriate entry in /dev for your device. Try to avoid using disk names, like cciss devices, and use the links to your disks under /dev/disk/by-id or /dev/disk/by-uuid -- pointing to devices similar to /dev/sda, /dev/sdb... in most of configurations).############################################################################Here is an example. Before upgrading my machine, I see that /boot/grub/device.map shows:(hd0) /dev/d

Plop also showed all of my OS's installed on the internal, so even though it may be a slight inconvience to have to boot a live CD in order to access all of error 21 my OSs, in the grand scheme of things, it really is not.So, figured I would start installing OSs on my other partitions on the external.1st one I started with (Pinguy was actually the first install) was OpenSUSE. (Installed / to SDB6) I recall the LAST time I attempted to install OpenSUSE I got the same problem and ended re-installing everything. Now, the fact that Ihave good clones on all of these partitions would make grub error 21 this easier, I would still like to be able to fix Grub so that I can get my grub menu back up.:)I booted with my XP disk and fixed the MBR so now when I start the lappy it goes straight into XP.So I figured I could put my UE 2.8 DVD in and maybe get into a rescue mode and a terminal so that I could set my grub menu to the MBR and be back up and running.Well that did not work because when I select F4 and type rescue acpi=offIt tells me kernel can't find rescue. What ever.I know that if I can just get into the Terminal in UE 2.8 which is hosting my grub (or at least it was) and edit my grub.cfg and write it to the MBR, I will be good to go.Now Parted Magic has Super Grub Disk 1 and 2 built in.Of course Disk 1 is for legacy. It did not even register that UE 2.8 was on SDA6. Now with that being said, could I go into Mandriva (Which is on SDA7) and have it take over as boot host? When I tried running SGD 2, it went through some texts, said welcome to grub and rebooted the computer never actually going into the program.Thinking I may try

Started out by de-fragmenting and repairing any bad sectors on my computers hard drive. Originally I tried to use an Unbuntu 8.10 live disc that I got from a magazine, however it wouldn't load either as a live disc or full install. It kept giving me the message; Busybox V1.10.2 (unbuntu 1.1:10.2-1unbuntu6) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
