Plan to use GRUB for multiple booting to select the OS but only with luck have I got it partially to work. Windows 98 and Puppy 431 O.K on first HDD but Puppy 421 on second HDD /dev/sdb1 stops at error 21. My setup is as follows Partition Filesystem Mount Point Flags http://forums.justlinux.com/showthread.php?153454-Grub-Error-21-Selected-Disk-does-not-exist OS (Operating System) /dev/sda1 fat32 boot, lba Windows 98 /dev/sda2 ext2 / - Puppy Linux 431 linux-swap - - Puppy Linux 431 swap space /dev/sdb1 ext2 boot Puppy Linux 421 linux-swap - - - Puppy Linux 421 swap space Additionally can anyone tell how might add an option to EXIT via Grub. I have pasted my Grub file menu.lst file to look at or editing if you so need to. This will be a bulky and untidy script as I tried everything I could think of to get it partially working such placing it in MBR of drive and root of partition. The pasted text from the Grub menu.lst is as below # GRUB configuration file '/boot/grub/menu.lst'. # generated by 'grubconfig'. Fri Mar 4 18:06:16 2011 # # The backup copy of the MBR for drive '/dev/sda' is # here '/boot/grub/mbr.sda.29378'. You can restore it like this. # dd if=/boot/grub/mbr.sda.29378 of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1 # # Start GRUB global section #timeout 30 color light-gray/blue black/light-gray # End GRUB global section # Other bootable partition config begins title Windows (on /dev/sda1) rootnoverify (hd0,0) makeactive chainloader +1 # Other bootable partition config ends # Linux bootable partition config begins title Linux (on /dev/sda2) root (hd0,1) kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda2 ro vga=normal # Linux bootable partition config ends # Linux bootable partition config begins title Linux (on /dev/sdb1) root (hd1,0) kernel /boot/vm

Do you see the same issue, if you try to boot the unit from another slot? I guess the whole system was migrated to the logical volume manager (LVM) already, right? If you can boot successfully from another volume you can try to delete

I have a single 74gb sata system drive connected to the system board controller, and 8 500gb sata drives connected to a 3ware raid controller in a raid 5 configuration for data. With autocarving enabled, I have a 2tb logical raid drive and a 1tb logical raid drive. Durring install, the two logical raid drives are detected as sda and sdb. The single physical system drive is detected as sdc. Ideally I would like the system drive to be detected as sda and the raid drives to be sdb and sdc, but the only thing I could think to try was putting the raid controller in different pci-x slots. This didn't seem to make a difference. I proceded with the install and it wanted to install grub to the mbr on sda and set it to boot the system on sdc1. After installation, I am unable to boot the system. When I tell the bios to boot from the raid (sda) all I get is a black screen with the word "grub". If I tell the bios to boot from the system drive I get left at a grub prompt. I then try "root (hd2) and get the error 21. When I boot from the cd in rescue mode, and manualy install grub using "root (hd2) setup (hd2,0), it sees the drive and installs the bootloader, but when I reboot I get the splash screen and then the machine reboots. Any ideas?
