Installed new Seagate 80G HD; used Seagate's utility to copy old C: to new drive as new boot drive. All seems to work fine, except, when booting up, SQL server doesn't start. When I try to start it manually I get the following: Could not start SQLSERVER service on the local computer. Error 3: the system cannot find the specified path. 1. What could be wrong? 2. How do I fix it? The service gathers this information at start up to find the "valid mointing point" for the master database. The key normally is located on the node HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQLServer\Parameters Changing this is sort of critical, so you better save your registry key first to restore it, if something unexpectly happens. Apparently, when I duplicated the hard drive, it somehow used the DOS ~ naming conventions. Once I changed back to the named path, all seemed to work fine. Thanks to all who replied to my question. Check if the file exists at this location. Is this error coming from SQL Server or the OS? Fr

BULK INSERT dbo.CentralRepository_Associate_Details FROM '/1CAAP/1413/data/csvtest1.csv' WITH (FIELDTERMINATOR = ';') and got the following error : Cannot bulk load because the file "/1CAAP/1413/data/csvtest1.csv" could not be opened. So explanation in layman terms would be really helpful. sql-server share|improve this question asked Jun 5 '14 at 7:29 user3455309 1111 migrated from stackoverflow.com Jun 5 '14 at 9:56 This question came from our site for professional and enthusiast programmers. First of all the path should be as Ilya explained in windows path format i.e C:\Files\FileName.CSV and you are also missing the ROWTERMINATOR clause of your bulk insert. –M.Ali Jun 5 '14 at 8:51 Hi Thanks, I need to run the file from the server. So is there anyway I can do it using bulk insert? or is there another alternative to do the same. –user3455309 Jun 5 '14 at 9:25 Is this file located on your network share? If this is the case you can still use the UNC Path \\ServerName\Folder\FileName.CSV , Just make use Your login has permissions on that Network Share. and correct your synatx for bulk insert, as you are missing ROWTERMINATOR clause of your bulk insert statement. –M.Ali Jun 5 '14 at 9:31 Hi, My login does have permi

Posted in Database After our previous blog on SQL Server Service is not responding, there were few who wanted to know if there were more reasons. In this blog we will explore 3 more reasons why the service cannot respond. In earlier blog post, we saw three major reason of SQL Service startup failure due to below: Reason # 1: Service account password changed but not updated on the server where SQL Server instance is installed Reason # 2: Startup parameters have incorrect file path locations. Reason # 3: System database files not available - accidental deletion or corruption due to disk failures. In this blog, we will discuss three more reasons why we can get the below error: Windows could not start the SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. OR “The service failed to respond in a timely fashion”. OR “The service failed to start”. Reason # 4: TempDB database moved incorrectly Moving TempDB database is not a common activity. Sometime DBA might make mistake while doing ALTER DATABASE for TempDB database. If SQL Server is not able to start system databases (master, model and TempDB) correctly, the service startup would fail. Let us assume we have moved TempDB to I:\TempDB using below command while SQL is running. ALTER DATABASE TEMPDB MODIFY FILE (NAME = tempdev, FILENAME = 'E:\TempDB\tempdb.mdf') Once the command is executed, we will received below message. The file "tempdev" has been modified in the system catalog
