These should usually be resolved automatically, and you should receive a final bounce-back message if the message completely fails. You usually would not receive a bounce-back message for this type of error. If your message is going to be delayed more than 24 hours, then sometimes a "delivery has been delayed" soft bounce will

his Outlook Express mail client on his desktop computer running Windows XP, since he is not too much computer literate he contacted me for help on what is causing the error http://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/email/bounceback-errors/email-error-421 and how he can get through the issue and send the prepared emails to the destinations ASAP. After I have asked him a few questions necessary to better understand the status of the problem and where does it originated I have come to the conclusion that it's very likely that his outgoing SMTP port (25) outgoing TCP/IP traffic passing through the Internet Service http://www.pc-freak.net/blog/what-causes-the-421-cannot-connect-to-smtp-server-error-and-a-quick-work-around/ Provider is filtered. When the 421 Cannot connect to SMTP server problem occured, he was actually in his parents house provided with an internet connection through a BTC ADSL see BTC (Vivacom)'s ADSL page for reference I have instructed my friend to try connecting to the SMTP (25) port of the questionable email server using window's telnet client i order to check if my assumption that the outoging SMTP 25 port traffic is filtered. I instructed him to issue a command like which is so common this days and it's not news to the Sysadmins out there: cmd> telnet mail.server.net 25 This prooved my theory that the 421 Cannot connect to SMTP server was caused by a filtered traffic on the outgoing network STMP port (25). Some Internet Providers out there has that annoying practice of filtering the outgoing SMTP connections, because they couldn't deal with infected Windows computers who start acting as a SPAM networks in another more clever way, however I should admit this is pretty dumb, since it creates numerous problems to the end user like in this particular case. reply codesSometimes your SMTP server may return a particular error message. The problem is that it will generally be very cryptic, like "550 Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable" or "421 Try again later". What does these http://www.serversmtp.com/en/smtp-error numbers mean?First of all: not any reply code is an error. Sometimes it's just a response containing a detail about the server or an answer to a command. Secondly: any code consist of three digits, and http://superuser.com/questions/1061732/unable-to-connect-to-smtp-server-421-connect-error-1460 each conveys a particular information. The first one defines whether the server has accepted the command, fulfilled an action, run into a temporary issue, encountered an error etc; the second and the third one refine the error 421 description further, stating if there's been a syntactic problem, or a connection trouble etc.Unfortunately, different servers sometimes use these codes in a different way, making the whole thing even more complicated... Anyhow, the most critical series of error messages is the 5xx one, and especially the ones from 550 to 559. In particular, you will probably get a lot of 550 SMTP error codes – that is, a problem that concerns the 421 downstream server recipient's email address. Finally, remember that it's much easier to deal with these error codes if you choose to rely on a professional SMTP server that will help you solve any issue. turboSMTP, for instance, comes with a 24/7 customer support: you can try it free and forget once for all these issues. And here's a list of the main SMTP error or reply messages, with an explanation and a tip about what to do. CODEMEANINGHOW TO SOLVE IT / WHAT TO DO101The server is unable to connect.Try to change the server's name (maybe it was spelt incorrectly) or the connection port.111Connection refused or inability to open an SMTP stream. This error normally refers to a connection issue with the remote SMTP server, depending on firewalls or misspelled domains. Double-check all the configurations and in case ask your provider.211System status message or help reply. It comes with more information about the server.214A response to the HELP command. It contains information about your particular server, normally pointing to a FAQ page.220The server is ready. It's just a welcome message. Just read it and be happy that everything is working (so far)!221The server is closing its transmission channel. It can come with side messages like "Goodbye" or "Closing connection".The mailing session is going to end, which simply means that all messages ha

When connected to MWeb's network, I'm not able to connect to any SMTP server via Outlook or telnet or any SMTP server, except MWeb's. I can, however, connect to any SMTP server when I'm connected using my Axxess account. MWeb have assured me that they're not blocking anything to do with email but the fact remains I can't use my SMTP server when connected to their network. An attempt to telnet into vodamail's SMTP server (solely to test the connection) yields the following: Microsoft Telnet> open smtp.vodamail.co.za 25 Connecting to smtp.vodamail.co.za... 421 Cannot connect to SMTP server 196.11.146.149 <196.11.146.149:25>, NB connect error 1460 Connection to host lost. Press any key to continue... I would be happy to substitute MWeb's SMTP server in my mail setup, however, there are problems with that to do with SMTP relays I believe.
