a problem when sending a mail to [emailprotected] (siol.net is my ISP) and others as yahoo (but gmail smtp error 421 works fine) I have followed instructions in this howto: http://workaround.org/articles/ispmail-etch/ My smtp 421 service not available /var/log/mail.log file with error of this: Code: Oct 17 20:08:47 streznik postfix/smtpd[11046]: connect from localhost.localdomain[127.0.0.1] Oct 17

And I got a reply explaining me that this error is shown because I send mail throu their server mailhub.siol.net and that if I have my own server I should send mesages throu it. Or else this relaying thing has to be configured. I read something about this on postfix sites but I kinda don't understand. Could someone explain in some simple way what this means, and give me a hint in which direction I have to search to repair this error? Thank you, Matic MaticKrajnc, Oct 17, 2007 #1 giganet New Member Most likely your ISP does not allow relaying through their servers from any email account not originating within that server(s). giganet, Oct 17, 2007 #2 MaticKrajnc New Member I would like to send email from my server, not relay throu some other servers. Email Error 421 Too Many Messages
to a configuration bug, two hosts on the same LAN configured to respond smtp error (421) connection to server failed to the IP address of the MX. It's fixed now. While it was broken, attempts to send mail on 421 service temporarily unavailable messagelabs some other systems got "421 Downstream server error." That is not a message that any of my mail software sends (I grepped for Downstream in the code, it's not there) so I presume https://www.howtoforge.com/community/threads/postfix-relaying-problem.16286/ it's from some middle box. Does anyone recognize the message, what produces it, and why? There was indeed stuff messed up downstream, but why turn it into a mystery error message? R's, John PS: I wonder how long it'll take for someone to suggest unhelpful configuration changes on my host to fix the problem. alex.lopez at opsys Jan19,2014,3:06PM Post #2 of 7 (3491 views) Permalink RE: Where does http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/nanog/users/168254 "Downstream server error" come from? [In reply to] I have seen this error whenever the destination server responds with some strange response, I have mostly seen it with iptables mucking packets. Problem occurs on the transport layer not the application so the application has no idea what to make of it... -------- Original message -------- From: John Levine Date:01/19/2014 5:57 PM (GMT-05:00) To: nanog [at] nanog Subject: Where does "Downstream server error" come from? Messages sorted by: [ date ] [ thread ] [ subject ] [ author ] I've come across this error (or something very similar to it) before. I can't remember the exact product, but it turned out to be a transparent SMTP proxy somewhere in the path - possibly on a UTM firewall, but I could be wrong about that part... Not overly helpful I know, but might point you in the right direction... Scott On Sun, Jan 19, 2014 at 2:55 PM, John Levine
