Re: SMON Vs PMON ben23 Apr 1, 2008 5:09 PM (in response to error 472 mbobak) If you kill one of the instance's background processes, SMON, LGWR, DBWR, etc, it's PMON that will detect it and bring the instance down.If you kill PMON, then one of the other background processes will also bring the instance down. Looks like the monitoring job (or at least monitoring the background processes) is shared around. Not that it matters, of course. :-) Like Show 0 Likes(0) Actions instance due to 16. Re: SMON Vs PMON ben23 Apr 1, 2008 6:07 PM (in response to Hans Forbrich) It looks like the process that discovers the event brings the instance down. In a quick test, I get the SMCO process (11g) doing the deed, and producing the following in a trace file: SMCO (ospid: 13657): terminating the instance due to error 472 Like Show 0 Likes(0) Actions 18. Re: SMON Vs PMON 546612 Apr 1, 2008 6:52 PM (in response to ben23) Interesting. Academically - if I were involved in the kernel, I'd probably have a small SGA table/list that identifies 'process 1-6' and reflects the last SCN they saw. All processes would periodically check the table and issue a suicide call is the table was not updated recently. An additional slot could identify the 'current instance status'.
