However, every single http://www.thewindowsclub.com/access-is-denied-local-services-windows-8-1 machine, after being OK for awhile, will eventually have problems starting services, such as DHCP, Event Viewer and Firewall (in total it's about 12 services that won't start, but I believe error 5 that is because of a cascading effect). You get Error 5: Access is Denied in Event log, or if you try to manually start the service. The network connection status does not work, you get "The service or dependency failed to start" and just a red X through the icon. Other things won't work like remote desktop, some audio functions error 5 access (eg in webcams), etc. This problem is driving me crazy and I have done everything under the sun to fix it. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943996/en-us as it describes the problem pretty well, however, the solution does NOT work in my case. I have reinstalled machines, system restored machines (which sometimes works, sometimes doesn't), NOT installed windows updates, installed windows updates. I should tell you I am joining these machines to a domain (windows 2003 server). We also had a Windows 2000 server as a DC and I thought that was the cause of the problem, however I asked our system analyst to remove that server as a DC. So now only the Windows 2003 server is the DC, but the problem is still there. I will deploy the computer to the user, they will be fine for awhile, then after a little while if they log out or reboot, their machine will hoze itself. If they stay logged in all day they will be fine. Does anyone have any ideas why all 10 of my machines are hozing themsel
Local Services in Windows 8.1/10 RECOMMENDED: Click here to fix Windows errors and improve system performance A few months ago, I got the update to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 on my laptop. Since then every thing went fine and I was truly enjoying the Windows 8.1 with the "Windows Re-imagined" concept. But yesterday when I went to check the Security Center, I came to know that the Windows Firewall service wasn't running on my system. So I headed to the Local Services window by pressing running services.msc command. Here I found that only a few services were running. I tried to start the leftover services, but I wasn't able to do so. I received the Access Is Denied error. This is the screenshot with one such service: Due to this Access is denied error, I couldn't start most of the local services and this messed up my system with warning and alerts. Initially, to fix it out, I did run the SFC /SCANNOW command to fix out any corrupted files associated with these services, but it didn't made any differences in the situation. Then eventually, I came around this solution which helped me to resolve the issue significantly: Windows could not start Service. Access Is Denied 1. Press Windows Key + R combination, type Regedt32.exe in the Run dialog box and hit Enter to open the Registry Editor. Advertisement ^ 2. Navigate to the following location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wcncsvc 3. In the left pane of this location, right click over the wcncsvc key and select Permissions. In the Permissions window, highlight the entry Administrators. 4. Make sure you have the Full control option checked as far as Permissions is concerned. Ensure same with Users entry as well. Click Apply followed by OK when down in both cases. Finally, close the Registry Editor and reboot the system. You should now be able to start local services without any hitch. This should help solve the problem.
