The servers are linked via crossover. I am using this setup to practice my log shipping before I move to the production databases. I am using the wizard to complete the log shipping. The primary server SQLCOM1 is to backup and restore the DB on the secondary server SQLCOM2\SQL_Data using the default http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=83667 folders after the restore. SQLCOM2\SQL_Data has been shared and I have permissions for most of the default SQL groups as well as a user 'connect' and the local admin. When I go to execute the log shipping it throws the following:BackupDiskFile::CreateMedia: Backup device '\\SQLCOM2\SQL_Data\AdventureWorks.bak' failed to create. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.).I am working with SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition SP1. (SP1 to replicate the production servers.)Thanks for any help,RyanSQL - Why are you so much trouble? nr SQLTeam MVY United Kingdom 12543 Posts Posted-05/16/2007: 11:12:35 Sounds like the account you are using doesn't have permission on \\SQLCOM2\SQL_Data\ to create the file.If you are able try making accounts admin on that server until you find out which one it is then you can find what permissions it really needs.I would try the sql server service account first.==========================================Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.DTS can be used in a similar way.Beer is not cold and it isn't fizzy. wellmanr Starting Member 7 Posts Posted-05/16/2007: 11:27:38 I keep reading in forums that the "sql server service account" needs to be changed but I am not sure where to change it at. SERVER - FIX - ERROR : Msg 3201, Level 16 Cannot open backup device . Operating system error 5(Access is denied.) April 13, 2011Pinal DaveSQL38 commentsRecently I formatted my computer and installed fresh SQL Server in it. I http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2011/04/13/sql-server-fix-error-msg-3201-level-16-cannot-open-backup-device-operating-system-error-5access-is-denied/ installed the AdventureWorks database in my database. Once done, I wanted to run few test scripts on my database. Just like every DBA, I decided to take backup of my database http://www.guyellisrocks.com/2010/07/create-file-encountered-operating.html - this way I can restore it back to attain an original database state. As soon as I ran the backup command I ended up with the following error. This error is error 5 due to a permissions issue on the local disk and user account which is running SQL Server. In this blog post we will talk about the operating system error. Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot open backup device ‘C:\AdventureWorks.bak'. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.). Fix/Resolution/Workaround: I checked which user accounts my SQL Server services are running.I gave full permission to error 5 access that account to get rid of the error.NOTE: This whole experience was done on the my personal machine and not on the production server. Please check with your network administrator for permission on production server.Let me know if you have ever faced such error and if you have, how did you fix the error. Please leave a comment with your answer. I hope you find this blog post helpful.Reference: Pinal Dave (http://blog.SQLAuthority.com) Tags: SQL Backup and Restore, SQL Data Storage, SQL Error Messages, SQL Server33Related Articles SQL SERVER - Who Changed the Password of SQL Login? - Interview Question of the Week #065 April 3, 2016Pinal Dave SQL SERVER - List the Name of the Months Between Date Ranges - Part 2 December 22, 2014Pinal Dave SQLAuthority News - Microsoft SQL Server 2005/2008 Query Optimization & Performance Tuning Training April 26, 2010Pinal Dave 38 comments. (SSMS) and I was getting the following error:CREATE FILE encountered operating system error 5(Access is denied.) while attempting to open or create the physical file 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\MyDataBase.mdf'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 5123)Found plenty of Google results pointing me to suggestions about SQL Server 2000 and 2005 with instructions on how to add user permissions and which user account needed to be added.Turned out that all I needed to do was to run SSMS as an administrator and the attach worked.
