#5 or #7 when I try to run it as administrator. Mark M, Aug 28, 2003 #1 Advertisements Patrick Guest Yes, ptedit32 should work on XP. You might try re-downloading the app - perhaps it's corrupt. I don't know if PowerQuest supports this free utility, but you might try calling their support line. Also, try finding and putting ptvxd.vxd in your windows\system folder. Hope this helps. Patrick, Aug 28, 2003 #2 Advertisements Smile Extender Guest At least it starts ok. I didn't try to change anything. At this PowerQuest web page http://www.powerquest.com/support/primus/id4374.cfm it says error 5 is either "Error finding VFLOPPY.SYS booting up." "Error 5 Can't copy file" althought PQ probably doesn't bother listing any error messages specific to a free utility like PTEDIT32. We are trying to do the same error 5 kind of factory restore, using Alt and F10 as it worked previously thank you for your help on that one. The problem however is bigger, the user had a password XXXXX Empowering Technology on the Acer. He cannot remember his password, and he wishes to do the restore. Is there any way this password XXXXX be reset? Share this conversation Expert: Tech Support replied5 years ago. Hi there! I'd be happy to assist error 5 powerquest you with this. Yes, there is a way to recover this password. It is stored in the TOOLS\AIMDRS.DAT on the hidden recovery partition of the computer. Depending on the age of the machine, you may be able to do this in the Disk Management console (Start > Run > diskmgmt.msc > Enter). Once there, look in the upper pane for a disk symbol without a letter. You can also find this on the visual diagram of your drive in the lower pane. It would appear as a block of your hard drive without a letter. If you find either of these, right-click and select Change Drive Letter, then click Add and select a drive letter to assign to the recovery drive. Once it is unhidden, look for AIMDRS.DAT in the TOOLS folder. Open a Notepad window (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad) and open this file. It will contain your password. Please let me know if you are unable to unhide your service partition (PQSERVICE) using the Disk Management console, as we can pursue the function with another tool. Elrohir RELATIONAL VALORIZATION Joined: Nov 22, 2004 Messages: 12,507 OK, so as anyone who read in my previous thread knows, my laptop won't read CD's - the driver is screwed up, or something, and I can't fix it. (I tried everything) So I figured I'd just copy all of my files onto my external hard drive and return the laptop to the factory settings. (By the way I have an Acer Aspire 3680, about two months old) But there's a problem - the eRecovery program needs a password which I don't remember, and wasn't one of my normal ones. I can't figure out any way to get around this. I tried the steps outlined here, but I couldn't get past step 1 - the program they suggested doesn't work! (I signed up and downloaded it, but I get a message saying "Error 5 starting the PowerQuest Engine") OK, so I figured I'd download another partition program, but that needed a Windows service pack update, so I downloaded that and....yep - that didn't work either! So after about three solid hours of working on this just tonight, I'm about ready to chuck the computer out the window. Is it that much to ask that I get a laptop that can actually run CD's? Or will at least cooperate when I'm trying to get rid of the problem? (And I burned the index and middle fingers on my left hand, so all this typing really sucks) Anyway, any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Is there a way to return the computer to factory settings without the password? (Without literally tossing the hard drive?) There's no mention of how to get the password or get a new one in the manual. (And yes, I know I'm an idiot for not making it "111111" or something and writing it down) Is there a way to go around it,
