takes ~30 seconds for the status to change from Opening to Ready . There are ~35 printers in this test case. I notice in the System Event Logs that printer drivers are constantly getting reinstalled, even though they're not getting changed on the print server. This is happening for all of the vendor's drivers, but with no pattern. Some times it'll be the Xerox and Ricoh... other system error 5 has occurred windows 10 times it's HP and Xerox, etc. I suspect this is the cause for the large delay when opening printers and faxes. PROBLEM: Windows Server 2008\Print Server\ XP clients experience Event ID 22 - print driver update after changing HP print queue setting on the Print Server CAUSE: The HP print driver that calls winspool!SetPrinterData results in a call to localspl!UpdatePrinterIni which updates the ChangeID. This specific set of calls produces the Event ID 22. [code trace examples] RESOLUTION: To summarize, this explains why the issue is specific to the HP print driver(as the other print drivers likely do not call SetPrinterData). If you want to purse root cause then contact HP to further investigate why their print driver is calling SetPrinterData. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I ended up installing the version-specific HP UPD PS 5.2 driver on the print server and converted all the queues to use it. Previously, all the queues were using the non-version specific driver. This appears to have solved the problem once and for all. If the testing
