I've been having serious problems with my Mac. Safari is unusable and now if I open Finder my computer comes to a halt. Running Disk Utility several times I always have the following at the end of the repair disk permissions. I dont know why ruby, gem and tmail would be installed on my machine. I do use Unix for some basic unix connections and run Matlab but don't think I should have tmail or gem on there. Does anyone know how to remove these programs if I should? Will an anti-virus like Sophos check for this?Open error 5: "Input/output error" on System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/doc /actionmailer-1.3.6/ri/TMail/MailFlags/cdesc-MailFlags.yamlOpen error 5: "Input/output error" on System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/doc /actionmailer-1.3.6/ri/TMail/MailFlags/flagged%3d-i.yamlOpen error 5: "Input/output error" on System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/doc /actionmailer-1.3.6/ri/TMail/MailFlags/flagged%3f-i.yamlOpen error 5: "Input/output error" on System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/doc /actionmailer-1.3.6/ri/TMail/MailFlags/replied%3d-i.yamlOpen error 5: "Input/output error" on System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/doc /actionmailer-1.3.6/ri/TMail/MailFlags/replied%3f-i.yamlOpen error 5: "Input/output error" on System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/doc /actionmailer-1.3.6/ri/TMail/MailFlags/seen%3d-i.yamlOpen error 5: "Input/output error" on System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/doc /actionmailer-1.3.6/ri/TMail/MailFlags/seen%3f-i.yamlOpen error 5: "Input/output error" on System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/doc /actionmailer-1.3.6/ri/TMail/Maildir/each_port-i.yamlOpen error 5: "Input/output error" on System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/doc /actionmailer-1.3.6/ri/TMail/Maildir/inspect-i.yamlOpen error 5: "Input/output error" on System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/doc /actionmailer-1.3.6/ri/TMail/Maildir/new-c.yamlOpen error 5: "Input/output error" on System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.fra

Put disk into recovery mode, got the recovery OS going, and opened disk utility. My Macnitosh HD was still there, but I ran "Verify permissions" and got the above error for a long time. Eventually, I stopped the process and hit "Verify Disk". This happened quickly, and it tells me that my Disk can't be repaired. (Not sure how to get a backup from the files I have, so help with that would be good) When I go to the menu and hit "Statup Disk" my copy of Mountain Lion is not present. Not exactly sure what to do in terms of backup, installing a new OS, repairs. Its sole HDD is a 750GB drive, formatted with Bootcamp. It's still running reasonably well, but in running a defragment pass on it, I've identified that there are a bunch of files which are refusing to be moved by the defragmenter open error 5 (iDefrag). iDefrag reports a POSIX error code of 5 when accessing the files. Picking one at random and trying to copy the file to another location in the shell also reports an error, which makes me think the problem is real and with the disk / FS. Output of cp is: cp: unity_nophysx.nexe: Input/output error Error code 5 is 'access denied' as far as I'm aware, but the defrag process is running as administrator and running cp using sudo on the suspect file makes no difference. Disk Utility, fsck and the Apple Hardware Test all claim the disk is fine. No SMART errors reported, and while there were some permissions errors, they weren't with the files iDefrag is complaining about, and Disk Utility claims to have fixed them without complaint. There are maybe a hundred or more corrupted files, but still a very small fraction of the drive. As far as I can tell, no system files or crucial data are affected. While it would be nice to retrieve the data, I don't mind reinstalling or going to backups. At this point I don't know if it's really the drive dying, just some bad sectors due to the drive being moved while writing, or some other minor corruption that can be wo
public IPaddress Recovering a non-readable disk on Mac OSX 2013/01/13 nbalkota Mac 84 Comments Today, as I intended to perform my regular Time Machine backup, I got welcomed by a very scary message when I connected my external hard disk to my MacBook. The disk you inserted you inserted was not readable by this computer. Now, I take pride in having never ever lost any data on my Macs since 1998, so I was concerned this might be the end of my record… In Disk Utility the drive device was listed, but no volume could be mounted due to a corrupted partition map. Don't ask me how it got corrupted in the first place. I would guess the disk never liked incident when it got unplugged without using the eject command… Anyway, salvation can come at no cost by using the Terminal in Mac OS X (assuming you have administrative rights): Connect your external disk Start terminal and use the 3 commands in bold red below If the last command was successful, disconnect and reconnect your disk, which should now be OK IronMan:~ nbalkota$ diskutil list /dev/disk0 #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: GUID_partition_scheme *250.1 GB disk0 1: EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1 2: Apple_HFS IronMan 249.2 GB disk0s2 3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB disk0s3 /dev/disk1 #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: FDisk_partition_scheme *1.0 TB disk1 1: 0xEE 1.0 TB disk1s1 IronMan:~ nbalkota$ sudo gpt recover /dev/disk1 WARNING: Improper use of the sudo command could lead to data loss or the deletion of important system files.
