Sometimes, probably when load increase, it serves a blank page with 503 service unavailable. Server load is not too high, is there a solution in apache configuration to solve this problem? Thank you apache-2.2 share|improve this question asked May 28 '09 at 9:37 Alessandro Astarita 28114 Does your apache serve as a proxy to another server such as tomcat? –David Rabinowitz May 28 '09 at 11:32 No, it doesn't. –Alessandro http://serverfault.com/questions/13620/apache-503-service-unavailable Astarita May 30 '09 at 11:12 add a comment| 4 Answers 4 active oldest votes up vote 3 down vote You could try changing to a different MPM, which you can do in the configuration, or tweaking the parameters of your MPM. For example, if you're using the prefork or worker MPMs then you can increase the MaxClients value. In the latter case, ThreadsPerChild might also be a useful configuration value to tweak. You can find information on the MPMs in the standard Apache documentation. However, unless you're running a really busy website, I'm surprised you're seeing 503 errors at all - is it possible that there's some really slow server-side code that's tying up Apache requests for far too long? If so, you might get more mileage improving that than just trying to work around it in Apache. share|improve this answer answered May 28 '09 at 9:48 Cartroo 20612 I'm using prefork MPM. Here is an extract of my httpd.conf: KeepAlive On MaxKeepAliveRequests 100 KeepAliveTimeout 15 StartServers 20 MinSpareServers 25 MaxSpareServers 50 MaxClients 256 MaxRequestsPerChild 50 The problem appears on a simple pure html based page. –Alessandro Astarita May 28 '09 at 10:12 add a comment| up vote 1 down vote Check your error log, which by default will be in /var/log/httpd/error_log If it mentions that you are our of worker processes then that could be your problem. share|impro

Once or twice a week, the server returns a "503 Service Unavailable". I can access the home page, but when I search for a book, I get the 503. Similarly, the staff can log in to the staff page, but when they do something after logging in, they get the same error. I get these in my apache logs: [Sun Sep 04 server error 503 14:22:30.246305 2016] [proxy:error] [pid 27422] (2)No such file or directory: AH02454: HTTP: attempt to connect to Unix domain socket /var/run/koha/nitc/plack.sock (localhost) failed [Sun Sep 04 14:22:30.246380 2016] [proxy:error] [pid 27422] AH00959: ap_proxy_connect_backend disabling worker for (localhost) for 60s [Sun Sep 04 14:22:30.246394 2016] [proxy_http:error] [pid 27422] [client 192.168.65.199:56448] AH01114: HTTP: failed to make connection to backend: httpd-UDS, referer: http://192.168.20.17:8080/index.html Hope someone can shred some light on this. apache-2.2 proxy share|improve this question asked Sep 4 at 18:44 daltonfury42 1025 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 3 down vote Apache2 acts as a reverse proxy here passing the requests coming to the web server forward to the actual application server, in your case KOHA here. First log line tells that Apache2 cannot see the Unix socket for the KOHA server, which is used for communication between Apache2 and the KOHA server. Therefore the 503 error code is returned by Apache2 to the visitor when it cannot reach the application server. The fact that the socket file is not there means that the server process is not running. So, you need to check your application server logs for clues why it crashes. share|improve this answer edited Sep 4 at 19:26 answered Sep 4 at 19:20 Tero Kilkanen 9,4221820 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign
errors, this means PHP processes are crashing while executing a script. As a result, Apache is not getting a valid response from PHP and considers the PHP-FPM service to be unavailable. The most common cause of this problem is buggy PHP code, such as buggy WordPress plugins or slow scripts. The best solution is to disable all WordPress plugins and check your app's PHP error log and PHP slow log. This problem can also be caused by buggy third-party PHP extensions or your server running out of memory.
