before EHLO. In one observation, this occurred when the system was experiencing an out of disk condition.Troubleshooting: Run SMTP Log or netmon trace and ensure there is enough disk storage and virtual memory for SMTP to operate. In other words a badly configured SMTP message was sent to another user for one reason or another. your mail Dušan Soravia Wednesday, May 23, 2007 Errors, Info Some users were receiving error <#5.5.2 smtp;554 5.5.2 Invalid data in message> #SMTP# error 554 windows live mail when they sent message with attachment. The problem is when attached document name error 554 ip name lookup failed. no ptr record found is longer than 50 characters. Some Firewalls have header size restriction and that limit blocks this messages to be

sent. To correct this, change header limit on affected Firewall or shorten the name of the document you are sending (which is probably not good permanent solution). ****** Update #1: Default http://forums.msexchange.org/HELP!_554_5%255%252_Invalid_data_in_message/m_30593800/tm.htm header size limit in Exchange 2007 is 64K. Update #2: It might be the SMTP version problem. Mail is rejected with CONTENT-DISPOSITION error (overly long message header field for CONTENT-DISPOSITION) but not for all SMTP servers (same mail sent through different SMTP servers). If you send mail with attachment that has name longer than 50 characters from Exchange 2007 directly through DNS http://www.exchangelog.info/2007/05/error-smtp554-552-invalid-data-in.html you may encounter this error, but if you send same mail from Exchange 2007 through smart host (other than Exchange) mail is delivered with no errors (possible workaround). Update #3: There is a good article on Symantec's web site about parameters in Config.cf file. Check SMTP block/unblock possibilities. Article: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-gate.nsf/pfdocs/2002031311321154?OpenDocument&ExpandSection=13%2C8 Update #4: Anonymous (*send me your name*) left a comment below regarding reasons for this error message: "We found this was simply a matter that the message was created in Outlook "rich text" format (which embeds attachments into the message body) instead of plain text or HTML which creates attachments normally" Error "<#5.5.2 smtp;554 5.5.2 Invalid data in message> #SMTP#" when you send attachment in your mail Reviewed by Dušan Soravia on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 Rating: 5 Share This: Facebook Twitter Google Pinterest Linkedin Info 12 comments: AnonymousJune 28, 2007 at 3:12 PMThanks a lot! Hi there, when sending SMTP mails to the exchange server, I sometimes receive this error message: 554 5.5.2 No valid recipients However, I don't receive it every http://www.winvistatips.com/threads/sending-smtp-mails-to-the-exchange-server.604709/ time. Also, I'm using a valid user account for sending mails (from/ to). Can you please tell me what to do to remove this error? cheers, Stephan stephan, Jan 5, 2005 #1 Advertisements http://www.yqcomputer.com/88_47589_1.htm andrewking Guest Are you using a firewall? We had similar problems using a WatchGuard firewall. We had to turn off the SMTP proxy. - Andrew andrewking, Jan 5, 2005 #2 Advertisements Bill Peng error 554 [MSFT] Guest Hi Stephan, I understand the problem to be as follows: You used a valid e-mail address (from/to) to send an e-mail to the SBS SMTP server, but sometimes you got an NDR message "554 5.5.2 No valid recipients". If I'm out of base, please don't hesitate to let me know. To clarify this issue, please let me know: 1. Whether you send the e-mail from error 554 5.5 the internet or from the corporate LAN. 2. Whether this issue happens on all senders/certain senders/all recipients/certain recipients. 3. If you would, please save the ndr e-mail as a .msg file and attach it to the post. Based on KB 284204, Delivery status notifications in Exchange Server and in Small Business Server http://support.microsoft.com/kb/284204/en-us [Important:] It seems that the possible cause of the 5.2.2 error is: The recipient's mailbox is over its storage limit. Please verify the mailbox storage and the queue storage quota limit on your exchange server. You can enable message tracking on the problematic Exchange Server to check the root cause of the error. 1. Enable Message Tracking on by right-click your Exchange server in ESM and click Properties. For more information, please check the "Message Tracking" section in the following KB article. 257265 XCON: General Troubleshooting for Exchange 2000 Transport Issues http://support.microsoft.com/?id=257265 2. Please: a) Search for the message in Tools \ Message Tracking Centre. (You can use the "Sender" "Recipients" as search criteria.) b) Double click to open it. c) Post the error information here. 3. Use Telnet to troubleshoot. (This method can help us determine if the problem occurs when communicating with the SMTP virtual server)
using Exchange 2003 as its SMTP server. The web application is NOT using a native SMTP engine so there is no relaying involved. When the application points to the Exchange server and tries to send an email to an external recipient, it returns error 554 5.5.2 "No valid recipients". Sending through the same web application to internal users is successful. We have tested the following: 1.) Sent email from Outlook client to the external recipient using the Exchange server - this works fine. 2.) Telnet to the remote mail server from the Exchange server and send a message to the external recipient from the command line - this works fine. 3.) Reconfigured the application to point to the Unix Sendmail server and send an email to the external user - this also works fine. When I look in the SMTP logs on Exchange, I see this (edited for privacy) 2006-09-07 18:28:01 12.34.56.78 internalsender RCPT - +TO:< XXXX@XXXXX.COM > 550 0 56 34 2006-09-07 18:28:01 12.34.56.78 internalsender DATA - - 554 0 0 4 2006-09-07 18:28:01 12.34.56.78 internalsender QUIT - internalsender 240 406 31 4 Any ideas on what the problem could be or where I should be looking for clues? Are you allowing relay from the ip address of the web server on the Exchange SMTP VS? Top Error 554 5.5.2 "No valid recipients" by Ed Crowley » Sun, 10 Sep 2006 07:42:18 The 554 is an SMTP error, so SMTP must be involved. You need to allow relay, and I would recommend that you configure the Web application to authenticate. -- Ed Crowley MVP - Exchange "Protecting the world from PSTs and brick backups!" Top 1.
