Error 554 Authentication Failed Must Login
Was using Outlook 2003, upgraded to Outlook 2007, and can not send emails. I get a message from the System Administrator, saying "554 Authentication Failed, must login" This started about Oct. 15, and I switched to Thunderbird as a mail client, and thought the upgrade to 2007 would siolve the problem, but it has not. I have no problems in Thunderbird, but I perfer using Outlook. Any ideas as to why and what I can do to solve the problem? hiramsquared, Jan 2, 2008 #1 Advertisements K. Orland Guest When doing the upgrade to Outlook 2007 from an earlier version, it's a good idea to create a new Outlook profile: http://www.howto-outlook.com/faq/newprofile.htm Let me know if that helps you or not. -- Kathleen Orland - MVP Outlook Outlook Tips: http://www.outlook-tips.net/ http://www.howto-outlook.com/ "hiramsquared" wrote: > Was using Outlook 2003, upgraded to Outlook 2007, and can not send emails. > I get a message from the System Administrator, saying "554 Authentication > Failed, must login" > > This started about Oct. 15, and I switched to Thunderbird as a mail client, > and thought the upgrade to 2007 would siolve the problem, but it has not. Two weeks ago I changed my ISP to BT. I have not changed my email address(es). Now I find that some (not all) mail that I send generates an error message. The message is:Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients. Subject: RE: Testing access Sent: 12/01/2016 11:34The following recipient(s) cannot be reached: 'NAME OF RECIPIENT' on 12/01/2016 11:34 Server error: '554 https://community.bt.com/t5/Email/Sending-mail-in-Outlook-occassional-failure/td-p/1576595 5.7.1 [R8] Authentication Failed, must login.'At a rough guess I would say about 10% of my mail is affected in this way. I do not understand why it is only a problem on these mails and not on all.In case it helps I am using Windows 10 but upgraded over 2 months ago and had no issues until I switched to BT. Solved! If you are sending on the BT servers you will need toauthenticate the emails that you send with your BT email address in the Outlook settings. Make sure the box "my server requires authentication" is ticked and click on the settings tab and instead of "use same as incoming" you need to enter your BT email address and password. I have checked "Authentication Allowed"I have checked "Use submission port (587)"I have UNchecked "Use relay personality, if defined."I have "Secure Socets when Sending" set to "Never."And I put in smtp.centurylink.net as my SMTP Server.Everything else is set as it was previously when Eudora worked properly. With these settings I still get the "Authentication Falied, login required" error message. Expert: Chris R. replied3 years ago. You want to make sure SSL is on. Never would mean this setting is in the Off position. SSL stands for secure socket layer. Give it a try again and let me know.
