SERVER - FIX – Linked Server Error 7399 Invalid authorization specification June 11, 2016Pinal DaveSQL1 commentI have personally seen when people use Linked Server there are a number of issues from authentication to performance. These issues are part of working with something that has so many variations the ole db provider sqlncli11 for linked server reported an error. authentication failed and permutations of actually going wrong. Many a times I suggest people to keep msg 7330, level 16, state 2, line 1 away from it as much as possible. But it cannot happen all the times and there are code blocks in their application that

relies on this as a requirement. This is one of the common error I see in various forums. When someone is new to SQL Server and tried to create a linked server, he/she would just give server https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2450479 name and choose SQL Server as server type and hit OK. But SSMS would provide below errorTITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio -------------------- The linked server has been created but failed a connection test. Whenever we connect to SQL, there are two waysSQL Authentication: To use this, we need to provide login name and password while connecting to SQL Server. These account are stored within SQL Server.Windows Authentication: While using Windows operating system, we can use logged in account to SQL and it would allow us to connect to SQL Server without providing password because we have already logged into operating system and have been authenticated by Windows. When the linked server is created, the default values under security is “Be made withou

Solved SQL Server 2012 Linked Server Authentication (Error error 7399 7399 & 7303) Posted on 2013-09-11 Windows Server 2012 MS SQL Server MS SQL Server 2008 1 Verified Solution 8 Comments 7,879 Views Last Modified: 2013-09-12 I am working with SQL Server 2012 and I would like to create a linked server on a shared network drive. I have several TXT and CSV files that are ftp’d to the shared sql server error directory nightly. To avoid reimporting the files every day I thought linking the files to the shared drive was a pretty good solution. (http://www.users.drew.edu/skass/sql/TextDriver.htm) I had a similar process working on a local instance SQL Server Express 2005 / 2008 on my laptop using “login’s current security context” but once I tried to replicate the functionality on an Enterprise SQL Server I ran into several problems. I was hoping to get some suggestions on what might be configured incorrectly. I attached a screenshot of what I have set up now that doesn’t work. I attached a screen shots to show what I have configured (LnkSvr_All_01.jpg). The login SQLuser has access to \\Domain\Shared\. If I login to windows server 2012 using SQLuser, I can navigate to the shared drive using windows explorer. However in SQL server management studio, I am apparently lacking some authentication piece. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. The test connection to the linked server failed. Additional information: An exception occurred while executing a Transaction-SQL statement or batch. specification'. I used my SA account, but i keep getting the error that the credentials specified are incorrect. There is a very simple answer to this question, which I will share with you. The error you get when the credentials are invalid:Linked server is a connection between two servers in your network. If you want to connect the servers, the specified credentials need to be known on both servers, So, unless you use the same password for sa acounts on all your network server, which is never recommended in the first place! I advise you to create a specific Linked server sql account, for example I created a LS_2014 account on both servers and specified on which databases the Linked server is allowed to read and select data, as you can see in the example below. This keeps your databases secure and easier to manage. You could also set it to use your current logged in account, but you need enough permissions on all servers and depending on who is using the SQL server, the linked server might not be available. If you use the account specifically created for the Linked server and test the linked server account, the connection will be successful and you will see the table you granted read permissions on is available in the linked server dropdown.
