Error 789 The L2tp Connection Attempt Failed Windows 7
I tested the VPN internally using the local ip address and it works fine. As error 789 the l2tp connection attempt failed because the security layer encountered soon as I try it from the wan on a remote computer it will not work. Gives me this "error 789: The L2TP

connection attempt failed because the security layer encountered a processing error during initial negotiations with remote computer" This is on a server 2008 r2 platform with a L2TP\IPSEC VPN with a preshared key. I only have mapped error 789 the l2tp connection attempt failed windows 8 port 1701, do I need 4500 and 500 also? What I have checked so far I have mapped over the port (1701) in the router, However when I use the online open port checker tool it cant find the service. I tested a http file server on that port and it saw my service to the port is not being block by my router. The Firewall is a set to allow the connection error 789 the l2tp connection attempt failed because the security layer over the correct network interface. Edge translation is allowed Any ideas? From your description, I understand that the error 789: "The L2TP connection attempt failed because the security layer encountered a processing error during initial negotiations with the remote computer" is received when trying VPN from the WAN on a remote computer. This is a generic error which is thrown when the IPSec negotiation fails for L2TP/IPSec connections. Possible causes for this issue could be: a> L2TP based VPN client (or VPN server) is behind NAT. b> Wrong certificate or pre-shared key is set on the VPN server or client c> Machine certificate or trusted root machine certificate is not present on the VPN server. d> Machine Certificate on VPN Server does not have 'Server Authentication' as the EKU Now please make sure correct certificate is used both on client and server side. In case Pre Shared Key (PSK) is used, make sure the same PSK is configured on the client and the VPN server machine. Hope this helps. I am trying https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/58a596a8-2a6d-46fe-9774-998dedfcd9bc/l2tpipsec-vpn-connection-issue-only-over-wan-error789?forum=winserverPN to deploy a L2TP over IPSec VPN server via my Windows Server 2012 R2. It is behind a firewall with a static NAT setup with all the necessary ports and services being forwarded to the internal address. I know it's configured properly because I can connect to the VPN via the internet. This is all fine and dandy, but here is my issue. I was using https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/466596-l2tp-only-allowing-1-vpn-client my iPhone to test the connection and managed to successfully connect with no problem. Then I tried to connect a second device (Mac) simultaneously, but got an error saying the server did not respond. I disconnected my iPhone, waited 5 minutes, and tried the Mac, and that connected no problem. But when I tried to connect my iPhone while the Mac as connected, I got the server not responding error. I tried this on Windows, but Windows will not work at all. Windows reports "error 789: The L2TP connection attempt failed because the security layer encountered a processing error during initial negotiations with remote computer." Has anyone ever encountered this before? Oh and I'm behind the FiOS firewall on both sides and the machine I'm using remotely is Windows 7 Pro x64 if this helps or makes a difference. Edit: I completely exposed the server to the Internet and the server allowed all simultaneous connections. I did not get to test to see if it resolved the error 789. Although on my firewall, I was allowing 500, 1701, 4500, ESP, and AH. Is there other ports that get used to allow multiple connections in through the

I see similar issues in your 'Search' section but I do not understand some of the terminology. I need to find where I can check the basic settings and hopefully rectify any problems. Our IT guys in JHB are quite useless and have not managed to do anything remotely. 0 Question by:erikindubai Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google LVL 11 Best Solution bydiprajbasu Microsoft Documents ********************************************************** When you try to use a virtual private network (VPN) connection through a Microsoft Windows 2000 Terminal Services client Go to Solution 2 Comments LVL 11 Overall: Level 11 VPN 8 Message Accepted Solution by:diprajbasu2010-11-02 Microsoft Documents ********************************************************** When you try to use a virtual private network (VPN) connection through a Microsoft Windows 2000 Terminal Services client session, you may receive the following error message: Error: 789 "The L2TP connection attempt failed because the security layer encountered a processing error during initial negotiations with the remote computer" However, you can successfully establish the VPN connection from the Terminal server console.
