symptom Error: 820E on USERxyz.DBorMsg.dbon POA. Error: "820E" on Client. Error: "The database facility reported error [820E] on userxyz.db" Error: File lock error [820E] User:UserName Client unresponsive after sending a mail for owner of USERxyz.DB Client displays "Sending: " for a long time in the status bar. Server goes to 100% utilization in TCP_Handler thread. HTTP interface of POA shows that the TCP_Handler thread stuck on action "Read Index". fix The hard disk that the Post Office was installed on was degenerating over time causing more and more 820E errors. Replacing the hard disk solved theerrors. cause An 820E error means that a process is locking the database in question - this is not always a bad https://forums.novell.com/showthread.php/440247-database-function-48-reported-error-820E-on-user-db error as databases can be locked for valid reasons such as GWCheck runs or mail delivery. Normally the POA will defer whatever action is was attempting and try again after a short period of time. If the 820E error persists on a particular database then troubleshooting steps need to be taken to find out what process is locking the file and why. Make sure your Post Office links in the properties of the GWIA and/or WebAccess objects are Client/Server only. cause The GroupWise clients are connecting via Direct. This can cause database corruption and lock the databases. fix Make sure your Post Office object is setup for Client/Server only for the clients. If the above suggestions do not resolve the problem the problem may be related to using out dated GroupWise Clients. Make sure all users are using current versions of the GroupWise Client. You can verify this if you have HTTP to the POA setup. Under the Status column click on C/S Users which will show each user currently logged in and the version of the GroupWise Client. It will not report the client version if the client is older than Enhancement Pack SP2. cause Corruption in database fix Using GWcheck run a structural rebuild on the specific database. Groupwise 5.5 was running on NW5 and error 820e on all files were migrated to NW6 and is running on NW6 with problems.The Problemswe have now is that we are keep getting820E error on userxxx.db and/or msgxx.db logged in POA log and ourusers are also getting Groupwise error (820E) as well . We have around 60 users and only 3 or 4 getting this error any given day. And it seems to be a different group ofusers on the different days. The user getting the error (820E) can not receive anyoutside (Internet) mail ,but they are able to sende-mails tooutside users (Internet).Further more it would take 2-3 hours for those users who have 820E Error to send internal messages, and sometimes it wouldn't sendinternal emails at all.Ouruser also reported that they can not delete or empty TRASH eitherwhen they had the 820E problem.Butstrangely enough, those userswon't have any problemto send and receive emailsin next day or so.Some other userswill experience the same problem(for a day or two).We rebuild the database twice using GWCHECK32 utility and still has the same problem.Checked the permission and rights on MAIL folder (it is identical to the old 5.0 server Mail folder).Also followed TID 1077933 - 820E on USERxyz.DB or Msg.db on POA on Novell Knowledgebase. No luck, still keep getting 820E error.Any suggestions on pointing to the problem is greatly appreciatedthankschar

This should clear any locks \ on the file and you could then try and run a standalone GWCheck on msg196.db. Obviously this would mean your users would be able to use GroupWise whilst the POA is \ down but it may get the problem solved. The 820e errors on the POA are happening when the POA tries to write a message to \ msg196.db whilst it is being (apparently) fixed. Once the db is healthy again the \ queued messages will be written to the db.
