I've configured an IIS 6 website with its own App Pool, which has its own AD domain credential. When I attempt to browse the site, I see a page that simply says "Access is denied.". There is no error code or information in Event Logs. I am able to open Notepad with the app pool account credentials (and open the html file I'm trying to browse). If I add the app pool's domain account to the local administrators group, the site loads. However, this is not acceptable for our environment. I have successfully configured this site on two servers (that are supposed to be identical in a load-balanced pair). However, try as I might, I can't find any difference between these two servers' configurations. iis iis-6 share|improve this question asked May 16 '12 at 13:24 northben 2,28112034 Its look like a Server Fault (serverfault.com) question, Stackoverflow is about code ;) –JoeBilly May 16 '12 at 15:06 I thought about that, but it looked like there were a lot more IIS related questions on here. Is there some way to move the question? –northben May 16 '12 at 16:19 It'll be moved by 3000+ users if needed ;) –JoeBilly May 29 '12 at 8:07 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote Is your pool identity present in the local group IIS_WPG ? This group ensure the Worker Process will have the required privileges to run correctly. Also, your WebSite root folder must have Read permissions for IIS_WPG, which is the case if your root is in Inetpub\wwwroot. Same f

My server people have just given me access to my shiny new web server, and it is refusing to run ASP pages. All of the security settings appear https://forums.iis.net/t/next/1177441 to be the same as my old, functional server, so I'm at a bit of a loss and hoping someone can help us figure this out. If I go to MyWebSite/anypath/something.htm -- it works just fine. If I go to the exact same file but rename it to .asp (in other words, still just a basic html file, not actually attempting to do anything), it prompts me to log in 3 times then gives up. The error it gives when you press Cancel or after the 3rd attempt is: "HTTP Error 401.1 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials" but I don't think that's actually a useful error message.
