Does the BIOS screen give you a key number to press to start the restore process?Edit: It might be the F8 key. When starting the system tap on that key (when you see the https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=38640.0 BIOS screen) until you (hopefully) see a menu.Best Regards... « Last Edit: September 13, 2008, 07:53:47 AM by ardvark » Logged bob3160 Avast Überevangelist Probably Bot Posts: 32310 56 Years of Happiness Re: Reformatting a DELL computer to factory setting (from recovery partition) « Reply #2 on: September 13, 2008, 03:45:10 PM » If your using vista, Check the following tutorial:http://www.ehow.com/how_2134715_dell-windows-vista-factory-settings.html Logged Free avast! The thing has some serious problems. Rather then try to fix them all, he asked me to simply get it back to normal then sell it for him. The problem is that the dell recovery partition can't be accessed to restore it to factory settings. It won't boot to the partition using Ctrl F11, manually starting error access to the the restore procedure by browsing to the partition -->Tools-->PCRestore.exe just fails saying access to \Tools\dp.sc was denied. There is no such file. Booting up and holding F8 lets me have the option to Repair My Computer, but that brings me to the account screen where I pick an account and type in a password. However, the only account I can choose is labled 'Other'. So you select it, it gives you the option to put in a username and password. No combination of users or passwords works. I used my NTFS password reset cd and reset the administrator password but still can't log in to this 'Other' account. The image file is called Factory.wim Is there some other way I can restore this thing to factory settings? It never came with a Vista dvd, it was all pre-loaded. To go there, you need to press F8 when booting up and choose "repair your computer". Make sure you login as someone who has administrative credentials. Choose Dell Factory Image Restore and click next. Be reminded that this will reformat your hard drive and you will lose any settings you changed and files you have created yourself. This will restore the computer to the original factory settings. When the restore operation is complete, click finish to reboot your computer. Hope this helps.
