So when for two results these bars overlap it means that it could be very well possible that there is no difference between the results, since the real result for both could be the point at which the bars overlap. This makes a found difference less reliable, since that difference could very easily be caused by chance. So which is wrong? This measurement of the radial velocity of 47 Ursae Majoris, a planet-hosting star, shows measurements with error bars and a best-fit line. Neither! When it comes to describing statistical uncertainty, such as drawing an error bar, the usual measure is plus or minus one “standard deviation.” In layfolks’ terms, this simply means t
