The How-To Geek Forums Have Migrated to Discourse How-To Geek Forums / Windows XP Add Remove programs Exception RUNDLL error (1 post) Started 6 years ago by cinque8 Topic Viewed 1102 times cinque8 Posts: 104 This post has been reported. Hi, when I go into Control Panel and try to run http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-update/windows-xp-add-remove-programs-tool-does-not-open/cbeaaad0-ee96-4c17-91fa-3c49492ac7f0 the Add Remove program, I get the following error: An exception occured while trying to run "C:\Windows\System32\Shell32.dll.Control_RUNDLL "C:\Windows\System32\appwiz.cpl" Add or Remove Programs" I did a search on my hard drive and found appwiz.cpl in two places: c:\Windows\System32 c:\Windows\Service Pack Files\386 If I doubleclick the file in the System32 http://www.howtogeek.com/forum/topic/add-remove-programs-exception-rundll-error folder, I get the above mentioned error message. But if I doubleclick the file in the 386 folder, the Add Remove program opens. I tried deleting the file in the System32 folder and replacing it with the one in 386, but I still get the error message. How can I fix this so that when I click on the Add Remove icon, the program starts? Thanks Reports: · Posted 6 years ago Top Topic Closed This topic has been closed to new replies. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! bigdaddy, #1 2005/01/19 Newt Inactive Joined: 2002/01/07 Messages: 10,974 Likes Received: 2 Trophy Points: 608 Location: Concord, NC, USA Computer Experience: ***** Could be any number of things but lets start with a 'fix' that will take care of the most likely ones. Click on start, on run, key in cmd and click OK. When you get the cmd window (DOS looking thing) open, key in each of the following lines and press the ENTER key after each line. You'll need to click OK on each of the confirmation windows. Code: regsvr32 mshtml.dll regsvr32 shdocvw.dll -i regsvr32 shell32.dll -i If you still can't run the add/remove piece, the back to start, run, key in Code: sfc /purgecache sfc /scannow and OK after each of those entries. You may be prompted for your XP Install CD and need to put it in the drive. When you test after either or both of the above fixes, try starting add/remove by clicking on start, run, keying in appwiz.cpl and clicking OK.
