member function to a function signature up vote 4 down vote favorite I'm using a 3rd party library that allows me to register callbacks for certain events. The register function looks something like this. It uses the Callback signature. typedef int (*Callback)(std::string); void registerCallback(Callback pCallback) { //it gets registered } My problem is that I want to register a member function as a callback something like error c2664 cannot convert argument this struct MyStruct { MyStruct(); int myCallback(std::string str); }; MyStruct::MyStruct() { registerCallback(&MyStruct::myCallback); } int MyStruct::myCallback(std::string str) { return 0; } Of course, the compiler complains, saying error C2664: 'registerCallback' : cannot convert parameter 1 from 'int (__thiscall MyStruct::* )(std::string)' to 'Callback' I've been looking at boost libraries like function and bind, but none of those seem to be able to do the trick. I've been searching all over Google for the answer, but I don't even know what to call this, so it hasn't been much help. Thanks in advance. c++ function boost bind signature share|improve this question asked Nov 8 '11 at 2:37 Jonathan Ross 2114 Thanks everyone! I found one other post that asks the same question, and it looks like the consensus is just to make the member function a normal function or make it static. link. Unless someone has some really crazy TMP tricks? –Jonathan Ross Nov 8 '11 at 6:20 add a comment| 6 Answers 6 active oldest votes up vote 6 down vote You're trying to pass a member function pointer as a normal function pointer which won't work. Member functions have to have the this pointer as one of

The callback function needs to have access to the front panel, and as such needs to be a http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8045322/c-function-callbacks-cannot-convert-from-a-member-function-to-a-function-sign member of the front panel class. I kept getting compile error C2276 when I tried passing the address of a member function. After implementing a few changes suggested by the author of the class, I now get the following error when compiling: error C2664: 'setCallbackFunction' : cannot convert parameter 1 from 'void (__stdcall CTestDlg::*)(int)' to https://bytes.com/topic/c/answers/705463-c2664-passing-member-function-pointer 'void (__cdecl *)(int)' There is no context in which this conversion is possible The line that causes the error is: Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers timer1.setCallbackFunction(&CTestDlg::timer1Event); The prototype of the callback function looks like this: Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers voidCALLBACKCTestDlg::timer1Event(inti) The prototype of the setCallbackFunction function looks like this: Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers VOIDLRTimer::setCallbackFunction(VOID(*_pCallback)(int)){ m_pCallback=_pCallback; } Do you have any ideas as to how I might fix this? I would greatly appreciate it if I could get a fix within the next 48 hours - this is a rather important part of a project I'm working on. I tried contacting the author of the class, but it looks like he hasn't been active for a while. Thank you!
