drive defrag will make their PC run faster. Not so. It could ccleaner kill your PC altogether, although this is unusual. Still, it's best to take precautions and understand why you are defragging your PC. Why defrag? The goal is efficiency. If you are defragmenting your computer for any other reason, then you've missed the point. We defrag a drive http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/forum/helproom-1/error-check-defrag-multple-defrags-270888/ to make it more efficient. But inefficient hard drives are not the only cause of a PC slowing down. Registry issues, bloatware, malware and just plain too much data can reduce a perfectly good PC to a dead crawl. So before you defrag your drive (which can take several hours) make sure that you have fixed other problems as well. http://www.fact-reviews.com/defrag/Before.aspx What's the Risk? Windows versions starting with WinNT include a "file move" API that most defrag programs use. The idea behind this APi is that a file should be movable even if the file is in use, and the file system will not lose data should something go wrong. Generally this has been achieved, but if a file is being written to the hard drive and a power failure occurs, data could be lost even though a lot of technology has been deployed to prevent this. Similarly, if something catastrophic happens to the OS and it gets corrupted, data would most likely be lost. However, most users are unlikely to encounter these "severe" scenarios. More likely is a bug in the defrag code, or a clash with a special driver or third party tool, such as a file encryption or compression program, that works very closely with the file system. If it has been badly designed, it could create problems with the defrag program. Follow the backup advice below. Programs that try to defrag your Windows drive
Repair and defragment hard disks, either by using the Error-checking tool and Disk Defragmenter utility included with Windows or by using https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/repair-defragment-hard-disks-windows.html a third-party disk utility (for example, Symantec Norton Utilities). You should run such utilities on each hard disk or partition. More information about the Error-checking tool and Disk Defragmenter appears below; for https://kb.wisc.edu/page.php?id=229 more information about a third-party disk utility, refer to the documentation for the utility. The Error-checking tool repairs bad sectors, lost allocation units and file fragments, cross-linked files, and invalid file names. error checking To access the Error-checking tool, choose Start > My Computer, right-click the desired hard disk, and choose Properties from the menu. In the Local Disk Properties dialog box, click the Tools tab, and then click Check Now in the Error-checking area.Note: To prevent Disk Defragmenter from moving files to bad sectors of a disk, run the Error-checking tool before running Disk Defragmenter.Disk Defragmenter rearranges error checking before the files and free space on your computer so that files are stored in contiguous units and free space is consolidated in one contiguous block. To access the Disk Defragmenter utility, choose Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter. Twitter™ and Facebook posts are not covered under the terms of Creative Commons. Disk Defragmenter in Windows. Frequent system crashes and freezes, or noticeable decreases in system performance can often be attributed to a poorly maintained hard-disk. This will be especially relevant to FAT32-formatted drives, though NTFS-formatted drives can also benefit from these procedures. Scandisk and Disk Defragmenter are two hard-drive maintenance tools included on Windows operating systems to help provide optimal disk performance. Check Disk Check Disk is a utility that checks your hard-drive (or floppy drive) for problems. It will check for directory structure errors, file errors, etc. To start the Windows' version of Check Disk, open the disk from an Explorer Window (such as from the"Computer" icon on the desktop, or by typing Computer into your Win8 Metro screen) then right-click the drive and select Properties. You will now see a pie-chart of the drive's usage. Click on the Tools tab. In the "Error-checking" section, click the Check Now button. There should be two options listed. One to automatically fix file system errors (which requires a restart if you are scanning your primary operating system drive) and another to scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. Select the options you want and hit start to begin the scan. Additional Check Disk Notes If you are attempting to scan the primary operating system drive (the C drive for example) with the "Automatically fix file system errors" option enabled, Windows will automatically schedule a disk check on the next reboot before Windows loads. Disk Defragmenter If you are experiencing slow system performance this may be due to your hard-drive files being fragmented. This will occur over time as files are deleted, added, and rearranged. Disk Defragmenter will rearrange the files and free space so that your computer can access the files more efficiently. To run Disk Defragmenter, perform the same steps as shown above and open the disk from an Explorer Window (such as from the My Computer or "Computer" icon on the desktop) then right-click the drive and select Properties. Click on the Tools tab. In the "Defragmentation" section, click the Defragment Now button. Additional Disk Defragmenter Notes Disk Defragmenter does not need to be run that often. Usually, once every 2-3 months should be enough unless your computer has above-average use. Vista by default schedules automatic defrags so running manual defrag scans should not be necessary unless the automatic scan was disabled by the user. Keywords:harddrive diagnostic tools diagnosis
