I have resized the C: drive from within Windows and have sufficient free space to install 10-04. When I go through the 10-04 installation process, I can get as far as "Prepare partitions" - step 5 of 8 - when I hit what I suspect is a quite basic problem but I can't find my way around it. The free space I want to use shows as: /dev/sda4 type ntfs (sda1 & sda2 being HP recovery Windows drives and sda3 the main windows C: drive). Highlighting this and just trying to go forward brings up the message "No root file system is defined. Correct from partitioning menu." Going in to change the partition brings up a pop-up that shows "use as: 'do not use the partition' " with a drop down of multiple options such as 'Ext4 journaling system'; 'ntfs' and 'swap area'. I am unclear if I now have to create both a swap area and Ext4 partition or if the all the allocation of space happens automatically - as prior installations (including a dual boot of XP and U09-10) have not required this level of intervention in partitioning. Am I missing something obvious? Searching the forum for the message did not pull anything relevant so would appreciate any guidance. Thanks in advance! Phillip Adv Reply May 2

At boot up it comes to a screen that says startup repair or boot normally. On boot normally it goes around for a while then comes back to the Acer logo screen. on startup repair it just goes back to the startup repair or boot normally screen. I downloaded and used a Vista Recovery Disk and it comes up with system volume on disk is corrupt. using chkdsk results in failed and error http://discussions.virtualdr.com/showthread.php?242009-RESOLVED-corrupt-file-system code = 0x1f. Do I need to nuke and pave or try to get a set of disks and just reinstall vista? Download UBCD and burn it to CD, it has all the disk testing utilities on it plus many more useful tools besides, then just boot with the disc in the drive and select the utility that you want.
