If it is in warranty, then contact Dell and they will fix it free of charge. If not, then get a new hard drive and reinstall windows/drivers/software with the discs that came with the laptop. Or you could take it in to a service shop and they will do it for you.Hope this helps!Joe Posted on Apr 09, 2012 Helpful 0 Not Helpful Flag You can't post conmments that contain an email address. × Comment Anonymously Video Images Add Your Answer Tips for a great answer: - Answer the question. - If you need clarification, ask it in the comment box above. - Better answers use proper spelling and grammar. - Provide details, sup

I bought an allegedly new Dell XPS400 from Dell Outlet online. It runs WinXP Home SP2 with a 250GB SATA HDD. I moved a few GBs of files (mostly mp3s, .wavs, and jpgs) on to the original Western Digital HDD. It worked fine for about a week, then everything crashed. Went around with Dell tech support, and after running CHKDSK, decided the HDD was bad. During these diagnostics, the drive was fine for the first 52% of the checking, then after that, I started getting the error msgs: 0F00:1A44 - Uncorrectable data error or 0F00:1A40 Address mark not found or 0F00:1348 Target drive aborted command. So Dell sent me a Maxtor 7L250SO as a replacement, which I installed, then they helped me reinstall the OpSys, programs, etc. Now I'm at the point where I'd like to try to retrieve the files that I loaded on to the WD HDD. Obviously I should have backed them up, but I didn't. Dell is going to try to walk me through this attempt later today, but I'd like to input from you folks. I have a spare SATA cable, and I've already been told not to get my hopes up. Any advice, suggestions, comments, instructions, etc. will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance! For any files that you can't these two freeware file recovery utilities have been very successful for many of our members: PC Inspector Restoration Nick.
