Facebook was down or unreachable for many of you for approximately 2.5 hours. This is the worst outage we’ve had in over four years, and we wanted to first of all apologize for what does error establishing a database connection mean it. handling of an error condition. An automated system for verifying configuration values ended up causing much more damage than it fixed. The intent of the automated system is to check for configuration values that http://www.werockyourweb.com/forums/topic/facebook-database-write-failed/ are invalid in the cache and replace them with updated values from the persistent store. This works well for a transient problem with the cache, but it doesn’t work when the persistent store is invalid. Today we made a change to the persistent copy of a configuration value that was interpreted as invalid. This meant that every single client saw the invalid value and attempted to https://www.facebook.com/notes/facebook-engineering/more-details-on-todays-outage/431441338919/ fix it. Because the fix involves making a query to a cluster of databases, that cluster was quickly overwhelmed by hundreds of thousands of queries a second. To make matters worse, every time a client got an error attempting to query one of the databases it interpreted it as an invalid value, and deleted the corresponding cache key. This meant that even after the original problem had been fixed, the stream of queries continued. As long as the databases failed to service some of the requests, they were causing even more requests to themselves. We had entered a feedback loop that didn’t allow the databases to recover. The way to stop the feedback cycle was quite painful - we had to stop all traffic to this database cluster, which meant turning off the site. Once the databases had recovered and the root cause had been fixed, we slowly allowed more people back onto the site. This got the site back up and running today, and for now we’ve turned off the system that attempts to correct configuration values. We’re exploring new designs for this configuration system following design patterns of other systems at Facebook that de

Facebook has been rolling out some updates to the photo viewer which may be contributing to the problem. Original Facebook Error: Facebook seems to be very buggy this morning. I've been receiving multiple errors while liking posts. This is a list of the error messages people have been receiving: "Database Write Failed- An error occurred while writing to our database. Please try again later" "Unable to hide minifeed story" The first error message is appearing when trying to "like" certain status updates. I've also experienced some errors with our company website. The like buttons are not properly displaying the number of likes for the given article - crisis I know! If I run the page's URL through the Facebook Debugger it shows the proper number of likes for that page. After doing some research, I've also discovered that many people were unable to access Facebook at all last night. Apparently Facebook was down for "server maintenance". A friend of mine brought it to my attention that Facebook has been changing around the chat interface for a couple days now. Maybe that has something to do with the database errors as well. I find it interesting that these errors are occurring only a day after Anonymous announced they will attempt to destroy Facebook on November 5, 2011. As soon as I find out some information regarding Facebook's bugginess, I will update this post. If you have more information on the situation please let me know in the comments section! Solutions: Unfortunately no fail proof solutions have been found up to this point. I would recommend refreshing the page a few times and if that does not work, log out of your Facebook profile, clear your browser's cache and log back in to Facebook. As I discover additional solutions, I will post them here so if you continue to experi
