Another form of erfc ( x ) {\displaystyle \operatorname 2 (x)} for non-negative x {\displaystyle x} is known as Craig's formula:[5] erfc ( x | x ≥ 0 ) = 2 π ∫ 0 π / 2 exp ( − x 2 sin 2 θ ) d θ . {\displaystyle \operatorname 0 (x|x\geq 0)={\frac Φ 9{\pi }}\int _ Φ 8^{\pi /2}\exp \left(-{\frac Φ 7}{\sin ^ Φ 6\theta }}\right)d\theta \,.} The imaginary error function, denoted erfi, is defined as erfi ( x ) = − i erf ( i x ) = 2 π ∫ 0 x e t 2 d t = 2 π e x 2 D ( x ) , {\displaystyle {\begin Φ 0\operatorname − 9 (x)&=-i\operatorname − 8 (ix)\\&={\frac − 7{\sqrt {\pi }}}\int _ − 6^ − 5e^ − 4}\,\mathrm − 3 t\\&={\frac − 2{\sqrt {\pi }}}e^ − 1}D(x),\end − 0}} where D(x) is the Dawson function (which can be used instead of erfi to avoid arithmetic overflow[3]). Despite the name "imaginary error function", erfi ( x ) {\displaystyle \operatorname 8 (x)} is real when x is real.

to figure out what the Maclaurin series of the error function looks like. I use the reference from Wikipedia to check my results, but I cannot seem to get it right. with I would expect and and thus the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Error_function first two terms of the Maclaurin series to be but this does not seem to be correct. What am I doing wrong? Anyone? 0 Back to top #2 Bignose Bignose Maths Expert Resident Experts 2,506 posts LocationIowa Posted 2 December 2007 - 03:33 PM If you are just looking for the series, you can check out MathWorld's page: http://mathworld.wol...urinSeries.htmlAs to the specifics of how to calculate it, what steps did you do? Post some details and we http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/27709-maclaurin-series-of-the-error-function/ may be able to diagnose where you made your mistakes. 0 Back to top #3 hobz hobz Atom Senior Members 243 posts Posted 2 December 2007 - 04:25 PM With Taylor expanded around a=0 leading to the Maclaurin series. which must be equal to zero because of identical limits I presume. And thus I get the first three Maclaurin terms to be which clearly differs from the series defined at MathWorld. I realize that I exchange all 's with the value for , but I have no idea what else to do. 0 Back to top #4 Bignose Bignose Maths Expert Resident Experts 2,506 posts LocationIowa Posted 2 December 2007 - 07:16 PM I think you need to be using the Leibniz rule for differentiating an integral:http://mathworld.wol...tegralRule.htmlI'll try to take a look at the problem a little later today...Edited to add: Actually, a pretty neat trick would be to put in the series approximation of e^(-x^2) into the integral first, then do the integral, then do the differentiation. 0 Back to top #5 uncool uncool Atom Senior Members 861 posts Posted 2 December 2007 - 09:35 PM The series for e^x is 1 + x + x^2/2 + ... + x^n/n! + ... So the series for e^(-x^2/2) is 1 - x^2/2 + x^4/4 - x^6/(3!2^3) + ... + (-1)^n x^(2n)/(2^n n!) + ... Therefore, the series for erf(x)
