When she sends a print job to the printer it prints an error page stating that there is a PCL XL error in the KERNEL subsystem, the error being https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20767348/PCL-XL-Error-IllegalTag-message-received-when-trying-to-print.html "IllegalTag". We have a number of users printing to this machine but only the one person receiving this error message as such I am wondering if this is something on her local machine settings, but if so I am not sure what. Please advise how best to proceed to resolve this issue. Thanks and regards Jeremy 0 Question by:Jerrytb Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google LVL 2 Best Solution byJamesNewton Try the PCL5e driver on that workstation rather than the PCL6 driver. It will work just as well and will not produce that error. I am new to any discussion group to show how desperate I am http://serverfault.com/questions/8775/pcl-xl-error to fix this problem. I have a HP Laserjet 4000 attached directly to my PC in the LPT1 port and run Windows XP Corporate. I have never had a problem printing anything - either error illegal from Word, Excel or emails. All of a sudden I cannot print eventhou one day I could and the next day I couldn't. Sometimes I am getting one line of various symbols and the printer showing data but not printing. Sometimes it will print a small spreadsheet from Excel and then a page with: PCL XL error Subsystem: KERNEL Error: Illegal Tag Operator: 0x59 Position: 676 I have deleted pcl xl error the printer, downloaded the driver from HP, reinstalled the printer, taken the printer off-line and back to on-line all with either no success or worst...print one or two times and then back to unkown symbols across the top of a page or the PCL XL error noted above. I am at wits end and have a lot of work to finish asap which all needs printed. While I can use software programs, I am a total novice when it comes to system errors or understanding interfaces. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. Thanks! More about : pcl error Anonymous a b α HP January 25, 2005 4:28:15 PM Archived from groups: microsoft.public.windowsxp.print_fax (More info?) The error can also be caused by an incompatibility between the Enhanced XL language and the software application that is associated with the file being printed, Adobe Photoshop Album in your case. The procedure in this HP support document for a different Laserjet model should help determining the source of the problem. In most cases the PCL5e drivers are recommended over PCL6 drivers. They work just as well and won't throw such errors. PCL 6 XL is less forgiving of slight glitches in the printer driver or software. PCL5e has been around longer and is considered more stable. share|improve this answer edited May 16 '09 at 11:16 answered May 15 '09 at 20:28 splattne 23.8k1686138 Thanks for the explanation. If you have an option to use a postscript driver rather than PCL you might get better results, seems true for a lot of Adobe products. share|improve this answer answered May 15 '09 at 20:12 nedm 4,68242244 I second the PS vs. PCL comment.
