Stress Error Plot - What are the units? stanm (Mechanical) (OP) 23 Sep 10 11:56 Can anyone explain finite element error estimation to me the basis of the stress error when plotted using the ERR option. Specifically, is this reporting the error in the energy norm or a more tangible error such as actual "stress" or a percentage error? I can't find anything in the user manual that explains this. RE: Stress Error Plot - What are the units? 2 EngAddict (Mechanical) 24 Sep 10 01:04 It is a percentage, start here:http://help.solidworks.com/2010/English/SolidWorks/cworks/legacyhelp/simulation/AnalysisBackground/StaticAnalysis/Stress_Error.htm RE: Stress Error Plot - What are the units? stanm (Mechanical) (OP) 1 Oct 10 05:53 Thanks EngAddict, that is aan excellent resource. Now,how do we consider the % error in the error norm to calculate possible maximum stresses? RE: Stress Error Plot - What are the units? Elabbasi (Mechanical) 1 Oct 10 07:53 This error measure should not be used to calculate maximum stresses but to check if you mesh is fine enough for the results to be reasonable accurate. If the error is high, especially in areas of high stress, then you need to rerun the analysis with a finer mesh and recheck the error. Jose Eduardo Fernandes de Camargo Aug 21, 2009 4:14 PM (in response to 1-FKI4X8) ENERGY NORM ERROR, is a norm that helps to find out how precisely is your analysis:Below you'd be able https://forum.solidworks.com/thread/25029 to find out how SolidWorks Simulation deals with it:Explanation of the ERR stress error estimation in COSMOS ProductsDiscussionIntroductionThe ERR option is currently available for the TRIANG, TETRA4, TETRA4R, TETRA10, SHELL3 and SHELL4 elements only. The estimator is based on energy error norm and allows good evaluation of local errors.Actually, the stress error estimation is based on the principle of the continuity of stress. The resulting stress distribution of a finite element analysis is generally discontinuous. The nodal stresses of each element are averaged to smooth the discontinuity in the element stresses. The stress error in each element is defined as the difference between the element stress and the average of the nodal stresses corrected using the form functions. This error is used to calculate the energy norm error for each element. COSMOS Products allow the user to plot a contour of the percentage of the elemental energy norm error relative to the average elemental energy.Zienkiewicz's method - simple error estimationIn finite element analysis of elastic problems, linear or higher order polynomial shape functions are used to model the behavior of discretized structures. As a result, a discontinuous stress field is gen

As such, it is crucial to all applications of mathematics in science and engineering, as well as being an important discipline on its own. Acta Numerica surveys annually the most important developments in numerical analysis and scientific computing. The subjects and authors of the substantive survey articles are chosen by a distinguished international editorial board so as to report the most important developments in the subject in a manner accessible to the wider community of professionals with an interest in scientific computing.
