This particular error can be experienced on various versions of operating systems. But for the purpose of this blog, we will focus on Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. The error is captured in the Application Event Log as such as:

At the normal prompt I typed "dir" (without the quotes) and pressed Enter to show a directory listing. I was presented with an ominous message stating: "an error occurred during directory enumeration" and the computer was unable to show error in a directory listing. It appeared that the information was lost on the hard drive. Follow the information below to see how to possibly recover from this dreaded situation. Booting into the Recovery ConsoleYou'll need your Windows XP installation CD or have access to it through your boot menu. Steps (5 total) 1 Boot from the installation cd Put the Windows set up disk in the cd drive, then shutdown the offending machine (Make sure the computer is set to boot from the CD first) Restart the computer and 2 when prompted, choose R for recovery console 3 When you see the C:\ prompt, run the following c:\fixboot followed by c:\fixmbr 4 When those have completed, run Chkdsk /p /r 5 To finish, reboot. Hopefully the nasty error will have gone away. When the computer has started, run the defrag utility in analyse mode, and check for pagefile fragmentation.
