Error Java Enconding Or Code Set Not Supported
error -79783 Technote (troubleshooting) Problem(Abstract) After JDBC upgrade to 3.50.JC1 onwards, customer who are using Multibyte codeset might received error such as : "FAILED: Fetch statement failed: Encoding or code set not supported. " error -79783 Symptom Error message: "FAILED: Fetch statement failed: Encoding or code set not supported. " error -79783 Cause JDBC version 3.50.JC1 introduced the following APAR: IC49877 - JDBC DRIVER ALLOWS INSERTION OF INVALID CHARACTERS FOR CHARACTER SET. http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21502902 While the behavior for this APAR is correct, it might lead to problems for those customers who use Native Multibyte data on the application side but store them into en_us locale on the server side. In some case, for customer who are using zh_tw.big5 locale on the server side; but stored illegal characters in the table will also be effected. Diagnosing the problem Error message happened right after upgrade. Resolving the problem Since version JDBC 3.50.JC5, user can set a flag IFX_USE_STRENC to switch to old style of encoding. Here's an example on how to use it: "jdbc:informix-sqli://inst:port:dbname:informixserver=XXX;user=informix;password=XX;DB_LOCALE=en_us.819;IFX_USE_STRENC=true;" Document information More support for: Informix Tools Informix JDBC Software version: 3.5 Operating system(s): AIX, DYNIX/ptx, HP-UX, IRIX, Linux, OS X, Platform Independent, Reliant UNIX, Solaris, Windows Software edition: Compiler, Developer, Rapid Development System Reference #: 1502902 Modified date: 2013-06-18 Site availability Site assistance Contact and feedback Need support? Support Bug with LVARCHAR columns in Informix a anonymous started a topic 7 months ago [This topic is migrated from our old forums. The original author name has been removed]Hello, I just detected a bug in displaying large LVARCHAR column values from Informix tables. https://support.dbvis.com/support/discussions/topics/1000077874 I used this column type several times before without this error, but now for the first time I have really long strings. I have a table with a column of type LVARCHAR(2048) which is the maximum length for this type. In the data tab of the table view as well as in the SQL Commander I get null values for this column (with a red background) and an error icon at the bottom of the display. Clicking the error icon results in the error error java message: "Error getting value for: 36/1: java.sql.SQLException: Encoding or code set not supported.". I then tried in an SQL Commander tab to get substring from tthis column. This worked until the length of 1026. All higher lengths result in the same error as the full column value. Do you have a limit for string values from the DB or is the problem inside the JDBC-Driver? And, most important: Do you know a workaround or (better) a correction? Thanks in advance for an answer and error java enconding best regards Wolfgang Pasche 5 CommentsOldest FirstPopularNewest FirstSorted by Oldest First Hans Bergsten said 7 months ago [This reply is migrated from our old forums.]Re: Bug with LVARCHAR columns in InformixHi Wolfgang, There are no limitations like this in DbVisualizer and I am unable to reproduce the problem with an LVARCHAR(2048) column. I'm using Informix Dynamic Server 11.50.UC3DE IBM Informix JDBC Driver for IBM Informix Dynamic Server 4.10.JC1DE Are you using an older driver maybe? Best Regards, Hans a anonymous said 7 months ago [This reply is migrated from our old forums. The original author name has been removed]Re: Bug with LVARCHAR columns in InformixHi Hans, yes, the jdbc-driver I am using is 3.70 JC4, because I connect to Informix 10. But our DBs will soon switch to Informix 11.70 or Informix 12. We already have the Informix client 4.10TC4W1, so I will try to install it and test the new jdbc driver (the new client should be able to connect to older Informix servers, otherwise I will fetch the new jdbc driver only). After testing that I will post the results here. Thank you for your recherche. Best regards Wolfgang a anonymous said 6 months ago [This reply is migrated from our old forums. The result in the LVARCHAR column is the same as before (I will try it on an Informi
