my freshly built system with Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3-B3 motherboard, I loaded Windows 64bit Home on a Crucial 64GB SSD. I could have sworn I had the BIOS set to AHCI prior to the install, but later on, noticed it was at IDE. ??? Changing it error loading operating system dell to AHCI causes the system to get to a black screen saying "Loading Operating System (always says that), but it never loads. I understand Windows 7 has an AHCI driver. ??? Does Windows know to set up the SSD as an AHCI device on install if the BIOS says AHCI? I want to run AHCI, and tried a hack where one changes a start value in a registry entry from 3 to 0. This does not work. Am I stuck with having to reinstall Windows 7? Can error loading operating system linux I try loading a driver from Gigabyte now and will that permit AHCI to work? - Phil My System Specs System Manufacturer/Model Number Home Built OS Windows 7 Home 64bit CPU Intel i5-2500k Sandy Bridge Motherboard Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3-B3 Memory G. I want to dual boot XP, so I started to install it and, when it rebooted, got the "Error loading operating system" message, which was expected since XP wipes out other MBRs. No biggie, I can just boot to a prompt using the Win7 disc and fix it there, right?Nope. When I try that I get "Press any http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?p=22100830 key to boot from CD" and then a blank screen with nothing but a flashing cursor. ::sigh:: Okay, so let's boot using the USB drive I installed Win7 from.Nope.When I do that I get "Error loading operating system" again. WTF?So, anyone know how I can fix this because right now I have a computer whose only function is BIOS tweaking. RobL777 Ars Tribunus Angusticlavius Tribus: SouthEastern U.S.A. Registered: Sep 22, 2008Posts: 9074 Posted: Mon Sep 26, 2011 6:14 pm BIOS tweaking may be just what the doctor ordered, at least partly. Change the boot order so that BIOS looks in the CD drive first, then goes from there. This should allow the Win 7 repair CD to work, if you quickly "Press any key..." after the POST. You may have to use the Win 7 repair disc several times in a row in order to retrieve your Win 7 install. It is still true that you want to install older Windows operating systems first, then later ones. In order to get around this in your situation, you could use the Easy BCD boot loader app. Put it on the Win 7 install, install Win XP to another partition, or hard drive, then knit the two operating systems together with the Easy BCD boot loader. This make take some study and effort on your part to do successfully. hux "Wonder en is gheen wonder" Ars Legatus Legionis Tribus: The lands of milk and curry (.uk) + milk an

Are you trying to say you have changed error loading operating the setting to AHCI mode in the BIOS from IDE mode? This can only be done before installation of the OS or by a registry hack afterwards. It cna also cause problem,s with other drives on the same controller if they ar enot fully compatible.Did you clear the CMOS before installing the new drive? « Last Edit: December 28, 2010, 11:34:57 am by Dark Mantis » Logged Gigabyte X58A-UD7i7 920Dominators 1600 x6 12GB6970 2GBHX850256GB SSD, Sam 1TB, WDB320GBBlu-RayHAF 932 Gigabyte Z68X-UD5-B3i7 3770KVengeance 1600 16GB6950 2GBHCP1200WRevo Drive x2, 1.5TB WDB RAID016x DLRWStrikeX S7 Full water cooling 3 x 27" Iiy MarkJohnson 251 7 Re: "Loading Operating System ..." « Reply #2 on: December 28, 2010, 06:25:35 pm » Yes, I did clear CMOS after initial install and reinstalled windows plus removed all drives except SSD and DVD. I read about the issue and read memory settings can cause issues so I reseated them and used the XMP profile as well.I also has the issue before installing the SSD a month ago when I switched to AHCI for my HDDs. While imaging my HDD for preparation of installing my SSD Acronis keeps reporting a partition has errors (I dual boot Windows/Ubuntu) and just assumed it was a linux issue as Acronis doesn't seem to recognize the partition properly (it sees the drive, but doesn't report the used space). But now it does it with wind
