error. 503 errors in the HTTP cycle Any client (e.g. your Web browser or our CheckUpDown robot) goes through the following cycle when it communicates with the Web server: Obtain an IP address from the IP name of the site (the site URL without the leading 'http://'). This lookup (conversion of IP name to IP address) is provided by domain name servers (DNSs). Open an IP socket connection to that IP address. Write an HTTP data stream through that socket. Receive an HTTP data stream back from the Web server in response. This data stream contains status codes whose values are determined by the HTTP protocol. Parse this data stream for status codes and other useful information. This error occurs in the final step above when the client receives an HTTP status code that it recognises as '503'. Issue: All users to see a "503 service unavailable" error. Causes: This error is is generated by the Connector when it is either unable to connect to the proxy servers or the connection times-out. There are several possible reasons why users may see this error: The firewall or a device on your network is blocking port 8080. The firewall is throttling connections to our proxy servers. There is another service running on the connector machine that is trying to use port 8080. Resolution: You can troubleshoot this issue as follows: Telnet to port 8080 of your primary tower and the backup tower from the connector machine. If connections to the both towers are blocked, your firewall may be blocking the connection to the port 8080 of proxy towers or you are having internal network issue. Please confirm with your network administrator that the connection to those proxy towers' port 8080 is not blocked. If you can reach the backup but not their primary tower, the firewall may be throttling the connection to the primary tower, meaning that the firewall saw the same IP address sending and receiving a large amount of web traffic and started limiting the connections. Configure your firewall to ignore the tower IP addresses or out them on the whitelist. Check whether the connector is hitting the limit of ephemeral ports While the problem is happening, run the following command from the Command Prompt on the Connector machine: netstat -na >C:\netstat.txt Go to Windows services panel, and restart the Proxy Agent service If restarting the Proxy Agent resumes the service, you may be experiencing an issue with the limit of ephemeral ports -- there may be more connections to that server than the connector machine can handle. Send the netstat.txt to Technical Support for analysis. Check port conflict Stop the proxy agent service from the Windows Serviced panel, and run the command below: netstat -na | find ":8080" If there is any process listening to port 8080, a service other than the connector is using the port 8080. Disable the service listening to port 80
