(Arch) I just did an update on my Arch Linux system, and among other annoyances, the PC speaker is sounding again. pcspkr is blacklisted in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist and "rmmod pcspkr" tells me "ERROR: Module pcspkr does not exist in /proc/modules" but the ruddy thing is still beeping. I do notice that it's not beeping as much as if pcspkr were active. It seems to be mainly in GIMP when I'm selecting files, so maybe it's a GTK thing? But it used to be that getting rid of the pcspkr module silenced all PC speaker beeps and isn't that how it should be? What m

When you run sudo, it asks for your password. If you have it run automatically, it won't ever get it! :) Instead, here is an alternative solution. Open "/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist" as root (gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist) and add this line to the end: blacklist pcspkr This puts the module on a blacklist, so it will never be loaded in the first place. I have the exact problems described in the first post of the above link, only this is on Gnome Shell, not kde. I have also tried, everything, that is mentioned in that post. I will go through the entire thread and post a list of what I have tried, in the morning, but for now I wanted to get this out there. It is increasingly annoying, especially when I have my speakers on full blast and pause my music and accidentally hit the wrong key at the wrong time.... I still get a screeching 'chirp' like beep. I will actually try blacklisting pcspkr since I don't know anything except what I've read about it which is that it should not matter as it isn't a 'pc speaker' so to speak, but it's worth a shot. And I checked just to be safe, there are no settings of any kind for an on-board speaker in the bios, and after examining the board I've never actually seen one. Perhaps it is software controlled, in which case I am trying the above as mentioned. Reply With Quote 27-Dec-2011,12:53 #3 robin_listas View Profile View Forum Posts View Blo
