Please refer to the official sound debugging guide and Ubuntu Audio Development team's pages for more up-to-date information. Booting If your boot hangs on loading the module for snd-hda-intel, try disabling the card in your BIOS. It is called "HD Audio Controller", "Azalia Audio" or similar. Then try solving the problem using the instructions below. Identify the Problem Most https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-users/2007-January/103652.html cards seem to work as of Ubuntu 9.04 or later using the stock kernel. However, the following problems might occur on some setups: No sound at all Low volume output High pitched noise Poor sound quality Sound disappears when touching volume controls Sound works at random after each reboot No mic working Sound only plays through headphones or internal speakers (not through attached audio sets) Manually Specify Module Parameters First you https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto must find which model of sound card you use, so run this command: cat /proc/asound/card0/codec* | grep CodecIt will return model of your sound card(s), for example: "Codec: Realtek ALC260", so your sound card is ALC260. You should open a file in ALSA documentation. This file is here: /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver/HD-Audio-Models.txt.gzor if that file does not exist, try: /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver/ALSA-Configuration.txt.gzor check: HD-Audio-Models (If you compiled your own kernel or ALSA modules, the documentation for your version can probably be found in the source package you used) Search for your model, and take a look at its types, for example I found the following lines for ALC260: hp HP machines hp-3013 HP machines (3013-variant) fujitsu Fujitsu S7020 acer Acer TravelMate basic fixed pin assignment (old default model) auto auto-config reading BIOS (default)Read all of them and try to find the one which is more similar to your sound card, for example if you have a laptop, you can choose "acer". Open /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base with the following command: sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-baseIn Ubunty Jaunty and more recent, the file ends with .conf : sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.confThen paste the following line at the end of the file (change MODEL with the type of sound card's model, in our example it should be "acer" (without quotation marks)): options snd-hda-i

This will make the snd-hda-intel module load up automatically at boot time. You can use: sudo sh -c 'echo "snd-hda-intel" >> /etc/modules' to do this. share|improve this answer answered Aug 31 '13 at 17:58 Alaa Ali 15.4k95173 add a comment| up vote 4 down vote In /etc/modules you can put every module (one per line) for those you need to load at boot time. Running this command will append the module to the file: echo "snd-hda-intel" | sudo tee -a /etc/modules share|improve this answer answered Aug 31 '13 at 17:58 gertvdijk 38.1k1598171 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Post as a guest Name Email discard By posting your answer, you agree to the privacy policy and terms of service. problems in Ubuntu 9.04 (Module snd_hda_intel is in use) I had installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my dell laptop and strangely there was a problem: there was no sound!!Although, there was sound on Ubuntu 8.04 so I did not expected this to happen in the version 9.04. The sound problem was also there in Fedora 11. The error I got was Module 'snd_hda_intel' is in use. After trying Ubuntu 8.04 live CD I got sound, so I decided to install Ubuntu 8.04 and wait for a fix on Fedora 11. After installation I found out Ubuntu 8.04 did not detected that my laptop has wifi and there was no option to connect to my wireless network. Now, I had sound but no wireless internet on my laptop even when it was wifi enabled :-(I then decided to upgrade it to Ubuntu 9.04 and see if I can get the sound to work. After installing Ubuntu 9.04 wifi started working but no sound as it was in Fedora 11. So, it appears there is something in the kernel which does not lets the sound to play. After googling for a couple of days I found something to fix the sound problem on Ubuntu 9.04. I am not sure if this will work for Fedora 11 or not.Below are the solutions I found on http://www.ubuntuforums.org/1. By gkgarg24, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1136670&page=2Hey Guys,I was also having same problem after upgrade to ubuntu 9.04. I am running it on Dell Inspiron 1420n. I did the following steps after searching through forums.1>Run the following commmandsudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base 2>Add the following text to it. options snd-intel8x0 ac97_quirk=1 buggy_irq=1 enable=1 index=0 options snd-hda-intel model=3stack enable=yes options snd-hda-intel model=auto position_fix=1 enable=yes3>Save the file.4>Rune the following commend : sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart 5>If this does not work try rebooting machine. Sound should be back again.Hope this helps!2. By babusar, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1136670&page=4I had this same problem when upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10 on my laptop and the same thing has happened again when upgrading to 9.04. I've found a work around that has worked for both these upgrades. This is taken from Bug #286610:you can fix it easily yourself by addingoptions snd-hda-intel model=laptop enable=1 index=0to the file /etc/modprobe.d/options. If you don't know how: Press Alt+F2, type for examplegksu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/optionspress enter, write the options line above in it, save, reboot and everything should be fine. It's worked fine for me on my HP 6735s laptop. Hope it helps.Michael3. By 4thfloorstudios, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1136670&page=2Ok, found out what is working to at least hear anything- Boo
