An IBM device-driver trace captured at the same time shows that an OPEN call to the tape drive was performed by some program other than Tivoli Storage Manager. The device-driver trace might also show TEST UNIT READY and PERSISTENT RESERVE calls. For example:
Resolving the problem In this case, the following third-party software programs were interfering with the tape device driver: HP Insight Management WBEM Providers for Windows Server 2003/2008 Altiris Hardware Discovery service Altiris Agent (AeXNSAgent.exe) HP Insight Management WBEM Providers for Windows Server 2003/2008 are not controlled by their own Windows service. The processes that are invoked by the presence of this software are instances of the WMIPRVSE.EXE image, linked to the Plug and Play service, which cannot be stopped or disabled. The Altiris Agent service can be used for software inventory purposes, and also provides an element of hardware discovery. To solve the errors, uninstall the above software programs to prevent them from interfering with the tape device driver. Also,

My TSM server on AIX 5.3 ML6 is running fine. Version error number 5.5.2 My tape Library is running latest firmware and is a TS3310 with 4x 3580 4G/s FC connected drives. I am getting the following error when it connects to the library to do any tasks and the /dev it reports varies from time to time. What is confusing is that this installation is no different from my other 3 sites. Could the error below anr8779e error number reflect a problem with the picker and motion portion of the library? 10/14/2009 10:24:21 AM ANR4578E Database backup/restore terminated - required volume was not mounted. 10/14/2009 10:29:54 AM ANR8779E Unable to open drive /dev/rmt3, error number=5. 10/14/2009 10:29:54 AM ANR8840E Unable to open device /dev/smc0 with error 5. 10/14/2009 10:29:54 AM ANR8942E Could not move volume ABO003L3 from slot-element 256 to slot-element 4097. 10/14/2009 10:29:54 AM ANR8840E Unable to open device /dev/smc0 with error 5. 10/14/2009 10:29:54 AM ANR8802E LABEL LIBVOLUME process 4 for library 3310LIB failed. All works fine from TSM side and no errors in any Hardware etc. Only the errors in the TSM actlog. On examining the TS3310 Library Logs, it was the Picker at fault (BRAND NEW LIBRARY). It has been replaced by the engineer and all is no working. On Unix operating systems, errno 16 means that the file was busy, or EBUSY. On Windows operating systems, the errno is 170, but the meaning is the same. This error indicates that the operating system could not satisfy Tivoli Storage Manager's request to open the device, because it was in use somewhere else. When dealing with special device files, this means that the device has an open reservation on it through a different HBA, which typically means on a separate host (but could be the same host if multiple HBA's are in use). What sequence of events occur during a library sharing tape volume mount? The Library Manager is responsible for drive allocation and assignments. Once a drive is as allocated, the owning host (Library Client/STA) ensures exclusive ownership by "reserving" the drive and the Library Manager maintains the drive inventory and owners. The following is an example of the sequence of events that tape place f
