Here's how it works: Anybody can ask a question Anybody can answer The best answers are voted up and rise to the top Why can't I copy my DVD with dd? up vote 6 down vote favorite 2 I tried dd, dd_rescue and ddrescue, all failed. I thought these tools bypass the filesystem and make a bitwise copy. dd is fooled, it finishes but dd dvd to iso just produces a small file and states it's finished. dd_rescuse and ddrescue are complaining about read errors and are intolerably slow. These tools can copy only a few MB in 10 minutes. Why is this happening, why are these tools failing? AnyDVD makes the disc copyable in a second on a Win7 host. It says that the UDF filesystem is patched, curiously, it also says that there are no bad sectors. The whole disc can be copied in 10 minutes. UPDATE: As for the solution, see my similar question on superuser. filesystems backup data-recovery dd dvd share|improve this question edited Feb 28 '12 at 21:07 asked Feb 24 '12 at 11:21 Ali 90141114 add a comment| 4 Answers 4 active oldest votes up vote 10 down vote accepted I think that the simplest answer is that dd, dd_rescue and ddrescue are not designed to defeat copy protection schemes. They make no assumptions about the format of the data and try to maintain the integrity of the whole of the original on disk data. In the case of dd I suspect that it is terminating due to an intentional read er

First, dvd::rip failed. Then `dd if=/dev/cdrom of=file.iso` failed. Then right clicking the cd icon on desktop and clicking copy (via brasero) failed. Each of the above worked at some point, and now all are giving me an i/o error like: dd: reading `/dev/cdrom': Input/output error 130784+0 records in 130784+0 records out 66961408 bytes (67 MB) copied, 41.6633 s, 1.6 MB/s Have also tried /dev/dvd to no avail. Any help greatly appreciated; I don't think I'm trying to do anything complicated! Adv Reply April 22nd, 2010 #2 takisan View Profile View Forum Posts Private Message Just Give Me the Beans! Most of the time I can use DVD Shrink to analyze error reading a movie and back it up to my hard drive and then Nero to burn it to disc. In the past when I got errors (usually "cyclic redundancy check" and this time too) then I would open DVD Fab Decrypter. I guess my version needed upgrading and then I would end up having to purchase the newest version so now I am looking for the next freeware solution. I think the dvd to iso info out there is confusing me because I downloaded RipIt4Me and received an error. The error came after I chose to create a PSL file and then Rip DVD. The error is "the folder is not a DVD folder" and "File does not exist" as in the VIDEO_TS.IFO file. Why does RipIt4Me automatically open with DVD FabDecrypter. I added DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink as tools. When I downloaded DVD Decrypter to use it as the initial step instead of RipIt4Me, I received an I/O error. What is the issue for me? What do I not know that is messing me up? AnyDVD charges too. Ideas anyone? Use the freeware DVDFAB HD DECRYPTER. http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm DVD DECRYPTER is no longer updated as well as RIPIT4ME. DVDFAB DECRYPTER is updated regularly to meet the new dvd copy encryptions that are usually with newly released dvd movies.
