Well I'm totally new to Ubuntu and Linux. I'm fed up with Windows and looking for a good alternative. Anyways I consider myself decently skilled with computers, fairly good with a couple programming languages, fluent in php, built my own pc, etc. Anyways I downloaded the ISO ubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-i386 and used InfraRecorder to burn it to a CD, but when I boot up my computer with the cd in the tray it comes up to the ubuntu menu, then no matter what I select (Install, Try Out, Check for Errors, etc) it says I/O Error, Error reading boot cd and gives me a button that says Reboot. I've tried burning the cd on 2 different computers with 3 different drives, 3 different ISO burning applications (InfraRecorder, MagicISO, and ISORecorder), on 4 different disks (1 Memorex CD-R, 3 Pengo CD-RW's), and 2 seperate downloads of the ISO. Yet all end up with the same error. So I'm asking, what could I be doing wron

In this quick tip, I'll ubuntu server usb install cd rom couldn't be mounted show you how to fix the issues with playing DVD or even encrypted DVD in Ubuntu 14.04. This article was originally written for Ubuntu 13.10 but as many readers have verified that it https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=856299 is also applicable to Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 16.04. This issue was raised by an It's FOSS reader Etienne Batori on things to do after installing Ubuntu 13.10. Here we shall see, in a more organized way, what we did to fix this issue of Ubuntu not reading DVDs. Play DVDs in Ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04: We need to install few codecs required specifically to play DVDs https://itsfoss.com/play-dvd-ubuntu-1310/ comfortably. These are: libdvdcss2: to recognize DVD libdvdread4: to read DVD libdvdnav4: to navigate DVD Step 1: First step (actually optional) is to get VLC media player. You can install VLC from Ubuntu Software Center or using the following command in terminal: sudo apt-get install vlc Once you have it installed, install libdvdcss2. It used to come by default with Medibuntu repository. But since Medibuntu is no longer available, you will have to install this library from the VLC repository. Use the links bellow to install libdvdcss2: 32 bit libdvdcss2 64 bit libdvdcss2 Double click on the downloaded deb files to install it via Ubuntu Software Center. Alternatively, you can use GDebi to install .deb files more easily. Step 2: Once we have it, lets install libdvdread4 and libdvdnav4. Use the following command in the terminal: sudo apt-get install libdvdread4 libdvdnav4 If the DVD play back does not work, try to set your region code. You can follow the instructions given here to set the region code. It worked for me without it. Suggested ReadKeep History Of Notifications With Recent Notifications AppIndicatorThat would be it. Ubuntu 12.04 up to 15.04 (i386, amd64) May also work for old releases, 9.04 onwards, that are no longer supported only if you have repositories on CD/DVD or somewhere. After this, VLC will automatically use it. Some programs may need recompilation. If after doing all this, you still get messages about not being able to play DVDs, check that the DVD drive has a region set (see below). Setting DVD Region Codes If your DVD player regularly locks up when you try to play back a DVD, your DVD player probably does not match the DVD's region code. Region codes are a form of vendor lock-in. For example, you cannot play a DVD published in Japan (Region 2) on a DVD player in the United States (Region 1) without changing the region code of the DVD player (unless you own a region-free DVD player). You can view or modify the region code of your DVD drive with the regionset tool. The author of regionset writes: "On delivery, most DVD drives hav
