Additional NSLU2 specific install / configuration information for Firefly is available on the project web site http://wiki.fireflymediaserver.org/NSLU2_Installation - richdunlop The package mt-daapd is an iTunes error reading config server for your NSLU2. Running it enables you to keep all your music on the drive connected to the NSLU2 and listen to it simply by opening iTunes on any Mac or PC in the same network. No need to map a drive. Mt-daapd depends on the separate packages libid3tag and zlib. Don't worry, just follow the steps below, and they will automatically be installed by ipkg. Just remember to always start mt-daapd with the start script '/opt/etc/init.d/S60mt-daapd' so that it actually finds zlib. Running '/opt/sbin/mt-daapd' manually is likely to give you an error message. Note: as of package mt-daapd_0.2.1.1-r2_armeb.ipk running on openslug-2.6, files are located in different places, please check your current version for actual location (ilg). End user Howto Check that your setup meets all IpkgRequirements. Telnet into your NSLU2 and run 'ipkg install mt-daapd'. From your workstation connect to the default network share 'DISK 1' on your NSLU2. Go into the folder "public". You might know that this relates to the folder /share/hdd/data/public. In "public" create a new folder called 'mp3'. Put music in the new folder - let's start with just a few

It was running a version of FireFly media server (svn-1463) that I'd hacked onto it thanks to instructions at http://k0lee.com/hpmediavault/iTunes/index.html. It worked very well with a library of 18000 songs, serving my three Roku SoundBridge M1001s that are still going strong - old tech, but they're fantastic.I was hoping to duplicate the same experience with a brand-new DS212j. I quickly discovered that the iTunes server, a different build of the FireFly media server (0.2.4.1) that is available as the iTunes Server package in DSM, was not up for the task. I could connect to the DiskStation FireFly service via iTunes on a computer (slooooooooowly), but the SoundBridges would not load my library. This is an issue that this build apparently has with larger libraries and is documented - caveat emptor. As an alternative, the Media Server failed. For some reason, it seemed to be unable to play many of the tracks in my library that are in .m4a format. The other alternative, the Logitech Media Server, could scan the library (also slooooooooooowly), but browsing my library on the SoundBridge was not as robust as what I was used to from the FireFly build I'd used before. So, I decided to install a different build of FireFly. I have relatively minimal Unix experience, basically enough to get myself into trouble. The steps that follow should be doable for most with some patience and familiarity with Unix.Step 1: Get puttyA handy way to SSH over to the DiskStation: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/Step 2: Enable SSH serviceOpen up the Terminal control panel in DSM and select 'Enable SSH service' Step 3: install ipkgFollowing instructions at:http://forum.synology.com/wiki/index.php/Overview_on_modifying_the_Synology_Server,_bootstrap,_ipkg_etc1. The DS212j uses a Marvell Kirkwood mv6281, so you'll need to grab the ipkg bootstrap here: http://ipkg.nslu2
