Installing and Running MiniDLNA on an Ubuntu Server damo12October 21st, 2011, 07:06 PMI have recently been experimenting with running MiniDLNA on a headless Ubuntu Server and have hit a few snags. After a lot of search and a few pointers from this and other forums I have finally managed to get it running fine. In case anyone else has this problem I have written this guide to hopefully take some of the pain out of installing and configuring an amazing program. The Hardware My server is a headless HP Microserver running Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS 64 bit edition accessed through Putty and Webmin (www.webmin.com (http://www.webmin.com/)). I have also tried this using a virtual setup using Virtual Box and that also worked fine. As a receiver, I am using an LG HX806SH Blu-ray player connected to my LAN by a Homeplug adapter. I have also tried using Windows Media Player and they both work fine. I would like to try this with VLC to test it on a Linux desktop but configuring VLC to receive streaming media from a server is beyond me right now. The Server Setup The server has a standard headless setup including Samba installed (a combination of Windows and Linux machines share files stored on it). If you need any help installing and using Webmin, I suggest you have a look at the excellent guide at http://www.kelvinwong.ca/2010/05/22/installing-webmin-on-ubuntu-server-10-04-lts-lucid/. Installing and Configuring MiniDLNA For some reason, when I tried to install MiniDLNA, through Putty I received error messages. From reading around, it turns out that this is a common problem as some repositories are missing. In the end, these commands installed the package: sudo apt-get install --reinstall python-software-properties && sudo dpkg-reconfigure python-software-properties sudo add-apt-repository ppa:stedy6/stedy-min

I have my minidlna set up and running - but it's not really done properly. First off, when I open the server on my bluray player, all of my movies are listed twice http://askubuntu.com/questions/331877/minidlna-directory-issues - when they are certainly not saved on my external twice. Second, when I open the server - rather than reading "Movies" "TV" "Music", etc - It just mashes all of my movies, tv, and some other folders all together with no real organization. I never had this problem when I had my Windows set up, so I know it's something configured improperly more-so than my external drive giving me gruff. Here's my minidlna.conf file: # This is the configuration file for the MiniDLNA daemon, a DLNA/UPnP-AV media # server. # # Unless otherwise noted, the commented out options show their default value. # # On Debian, you can also refer to the minidlna.conf(5) man page for # documentation about this file. media_dir=/media/somnambulist/Ghost In You # This option can be specified more than once if you want multiple directories # scanned. # # If you want to restrict a media_dir to a specific content type, you can # prepend the directory name with a letter representing the type (A, P or V), # followed by a comma, as so: # * "A" for audio (eg. media_dir=A,/var/lib/minidlna/music) # * "P" for pictures (eg. media_dir=P,/var/lib/minidlna/pictures) # * "V" fo
/etc/minidlna.conf, or the file specified with -f on the command line. The file contains keyword-argument pairs, one per line. Lines starting with ‘#’ and empty lines are interpreted as comments. The possible keywords http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/wily/man5/minidlna.conf.5.html and their meanings are as follows: album_art_names List of filenames to https://sourceforge.net/p/minidlna/discussion/879957/thread/e63925bf/ check for when searching for album art cache, separated by forward slashes (‘/’). This option can be specified more than once. db_dir Path to the directory minidlnad should use to store its database and album art cache. Uses /var/lib/minidlna by default. enable_tivo Set to “yes” error reading to enable support for streaming JPEG and mp3 files to a TiVo supporting HMO. Set to “no” otherwise. friendly_name Customize the name that the minidlnad server sends to clients. Defaults to “hostname: username”. force_sort_criteria Always set SortCriteria to this value, regardless of the SortCriteria passed by the clien t. ( E.g. force_sort_criteria=+upnp:class,+upnp:originalTrackNumber,+dc:title ) inotify Set to “yes” error reading configuration to enable inotify monitoring of the files under media_dir to automatically discover new files. Set to “no” to disable inotify. network_interface; if it is also unspecified or empty, it binds to all the valid network interfaces (except loopback). log_dir Path to the directory where the log file should be stored. Defaults to /var/log. log_level Defines the type of messages that should be logged, and down to which level of importance they should be considered. The possible types are “artwork”, “database”, “general”, “http”, “inotify”, “metadata”, “scanner”, “ssdp” and “tivo”. The levels are “off”, “fatal”, “error”, “warn”, “info” and “debug”, listed here in order of decreasing importance. “off” turns off logging messages entirely, “fatal” logs the most critical messages only, and so on down to “debug” that logs every single messages. The types are comma-separated, followed by an equal sign (‘=’), followed by a level that applies to the preceding types. This can be repeated, separating each of these constructs with a comma. Defaults to “general, artwork, database, inotify, scanner, metadata, http, ssdp, tivo=warn” which logs every t

I use an external hard drive which mounts automatically at "/media/Expansion Drive". I have tried to add certain paths on the external hard drive to minidlna.conf but it tells me that the directories are "not accessible". I think that this may mean that it is having trouble with the space in the path "Expansion Drive". I have tried escaping the space, using quotes, and wildcards, but nothing has worked. If I set minidlna to scan the whole of /media, it seems to work (although my music collection hasn't yet shown up, but that may be another story), but I would like the ability to drill down a bit more than this. Any way around this? If you would like to refer to this comment somewhere else in this project, copy and paste the following link: Justin Maggard - 2011-12-31 Spaces in the path work fine for me. What are the exact messages that you're seeing? I can't think of a cure for that except to start minidlna after *all* disks in the minidlna.conf are mounted. Does minidlna run at boot or when you log in. Is the disk plugged in before that? I have tried to add the spaces in the path and recreate the error. These are the errors that I am seeing: matt@shuttle:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/minidlna start Media directory not accessible!
