Vss File Is Already Open
"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> I might need your help. I’m having a problem regarding the Visual SourceSafe. Before this it works perfectly. The problem arises when one of the developers claiming that they can’t access the VSS (previously was OK). It says “Error reading from file”. Before this, usually if there’s an error regarding VSS it must be the pointing from client to the srcsafe.ini file at server is visual sourcesafe 2005 not correct. To solve this, just create a new path and point it to the file. I already done this but the error still occur. For you information, I already restarted the server machine twice but the same thing happen. Basically, we did a backup every night for the Visual Source Safe, and I did try for the backup for previous night and it seems fine (I restore the backup on local). Is there something wrong with the VSS? My last question is, if I run the Analyze.exe through the current database, what should I do when it prompt some data having error (like maybe it says unable to read the data) Should I remove it, maybe this is the data that causes the developers can’t access the VSS. Please. P/s I’m sorry I didn’t arise this problem in the forum, since this is critical and all the developers code are inside the VSS.

I've been trying to archive and run "analyze" and keep getting "Access to file [filename] is denied. The file may be read-only, error reading may be in use, or you may not have permission to write to the file. Correct this problem and run analyze again." No one is logged into SourceSafe (including myself) and I'm running the analyze utility from the VS command prompt as follows: analyze -v -f -bbackuppath databasepath I get similar errors if I try and create project archives from the ssadmin tool. The database is on a network share, and we're running VSS 2005 v8.0.50727.42. I'd love to be able to do this, as it would error reading from be a first step in a move away from VSS. Thanks in advance. More Info Every time I run analyze, the file that spawns the access denied message changes. It's almost as if running analyze unlocks that file so that the next time I get through to the next one. visual-sourcesafe share|improve this question edited May 23 '10 at 3:52 Jon Seigel 9,49754381 asked Nov 27 '09 at 15:36 AJ. 9,0901459114 This doesn't directly address your question and I apologize if this is annoying: If you have the chance, get rid of VSS. It's widely regarded as the most incompetent of source control tools. Database corruption and loss of files is common, and it's no fun to work with either. There are much better programs available for $FREE . If your code is important enough for source control, it's too important to trust to VSS. –Carl Smotricz Nov 27 '09 at 15:40 @Carl Smotricz - Yes, I know, that's part of why I'm trying to get things in order. –AJ. We did a few things to get it working. Turned off the network share, apparently we still had users accessing the share that we couldn't see, this helped most of the time. Otherwise we copied the repository locally, then ran analyze on it from there

See if someone logged in with administrative rights to all the folders (with full access to everything) can get to it. If they can, you'll have to fix the permissions issues.
