commented Aug 1, 2015 I'm trying to create a bootable Kali Linux USB on a Windows 10 system. I have searched for hours trying to figure this out, but I haven't been able to find anything on it, so I'm posting... hopefully it's something I'm just missing. Every time I use Rufus i get the error "Error: ISO image extraction failure". I'm using Rufus 2.2.668 Here is the log: Rufus version: 2.2.668 Windows version: Windows 10 64-bit Syslinux versions: 4.07/2013-07-25, 6.03/2014-10-06 Grub versions: 0.4.6a, 2.02~beta2 Locale ID: 0x0409 Found USB 2.0 device 'SanDisk Cruzer Blade USB Device' (0781:5567) 1 device found Disk type: Removable, Sector Size: 512 bytes Cylinders: 1946, TracksPerCylinder: 255, SectorsPerTrack: 63 Partition type: MBR, NB Partitions: 1 Disk ID: 0x00060225 Drive has a Syslinux Master Boot Record Partition 1: Type: FAT32 LBA (0x0c) Size: 14.9 GB (16007561216 bytes) Start Sector: 2048, Boot: Yes, Recognized: Yes Scanning image... RECOMMENDED: Click here to fix Windows errors and improve PC performance These days, a large number of PC users prefer installing Windows OS from a USB drive instead of traditional DVD http://www.intowindows.com/fix-the-selected-file-is-not-a-valid-iso-file-error-in-windows-7-usbdvd-download-tool/ disc. Even though there are plenty of better tools out there like Rufus to create bootable USB from an ISO file, most PC users prefer using the official Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool.Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool sports an easy-to-use http://askubuntu.com/questions/596998/unable-to-install-guest-additions-unknown-filesystem-type-iso9660 interface and is compatible with Windows 8/8.1 as well as the latest Windows 10 but at times when you open Windows ISO file by clicking the Browse button, the tool shows “The selected file is not a valid ISO file. error reading Please select a valid ISO file and try again” error. While I am no expert, the error occurs when the selected ISO file has only ISO9660 file system, and missing UDF and Joliet. In order to fix this error, you need to re-build the ISO file with ISO9660 + UDF + Joliet file system. A quick Google search reveals that there are plenty of guides out there to fix this error but the catch is that all of them ask you download error reading iso PowerISO or UltraISO software. The real catch is that both UltraISO and PowerISO aren’t free and you need to purchase their licenses. And no, the trail software can’t handle large ISO files.Users who want to fix “The selected file is not a valid ISO file. Please select a valid ISO file and try again” error with the help of a free software can follow the given below instructions.NOTE: These instructions work great on Windows 10 as well.Method 1: Step 1: Download ImgBurn software from here and install the same on your PC. As some of you know, ImgBurn is a free software and is compatible with all recent versions of Windows, both 32-bit and 64-bit systems.Step 2: Launch ImgBurn, click Create image file from files/folder. Drag and drop the ISO file to ImgBurn window to add it to the source list.Step 3: Select a location to save the new ISO file by clicking the Browse button next to Destination box.Step 4: Click on the Options tab on the right-side pane of ImgBurn and select the file system as ISO9660 + Joliet + UDF from the drop-down menu.Step 5: Finally, click the Build button (see picture) to begin saving the edited ISO file with new file system. Click Yes button when you see the confirmation dialog and click Yes button again if you see confirm Volume Label dialog box, and finally, click OK button to begin saving the ISO file.Once the jcommunities company blog Stack Exchange Inbox Reputation and Badges sign up log in tour help Tour Start here for a quick overview of the site Help Center Detailed answers to any questions you might have Meta Discuss the workings and policies of this site About Us Learn more about Stack Overflow the company Business Learn more about hiring developers or posting ads with us Ask Ubuntu Questions Tags Users Badges Unanswered Ask Question _ Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. I've spent quite a time looking for a solution online, but nothing helped... As suggested below, I've tried to mount manually and also download ISO from the web (version matching VirtualBox). The same error: EDIT: Now some folders became "read-only", which causes big troubles.. Even installing fresh Ubuntu 14.04 image doesn't help... So reinstalling of VirtualBox itself... 14.04 virtualbox guest-additions share|improve this question edited Mar 15 '15 at 18:19 asked Mar 15 '15 at 8:37 Oleg Shirokikh 481139 add a comment| 6 Answers 6 active oldest votes up vote 30 down vote accepted I was able to resolve the mounting issue by the reinstalling the linux image: sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-$(uname -r) BTW, it all started with upgrading VirtualBox. Bidirectional clipboard stopped working so I tried to reinsert Guest Additions ISO. This caused above stuff. Now, Guest Additions are mounted back, but clipboard wtill doesn't work... share|improve this answer answered Mar 15 '15 at 22:43 Oleg Shirokikh 481139 4 I had the same problems today (clipboard broken, no CD image would mount). Your solution plus reinstalling Guest Additions solves both. –Mark Smith Apr 24 '15 at 10:42 yeah, exactly same problem! –Lucas Pottersky Nov 16 '15 at 17:55 1 Worked for version 5.x also –Karl Morrison Mar 1 at 1:36 add a comment| Did you find this question interesting?
