She tries to add data from ArcGIS online from ArcMap (v10), clicks on any of the available maps, it appears http://support.esri.com/technical-article/000011267 to load, and then she recieves an error stating "Error Reading Package Contents". She has tried this on several machines on different days. All other students are able to open the ArcGIS online layers via ArcMap (v10) with no problems. Any suggestions? Thanks,Christina HupyOutcomesVisibility: ArcGIS Online3077 ViewsLast modified on Oct 4, 2010 6:52 AMTags:onlineContent tagged with onlinearcgis_onlineContent tagged with arcgis_onlineThis content has been marked as final. She recieves this error no matter what layer she is trying to add! She tried again today and is recieving the same error while none of my other students have thisproblem. Any ideas?Christina,Can you share the layer package with me, so I can test it?There shouldn't be any issues with an individual account consuming content. Thanks,AndrewLike • Show 0 Likes0 Actions astauffer-esristaff Oct 6, 2010 12:10 PMHi Christina,I can't think of a reason why a single account would have problems opening the public basemaps. Does she have problems using the basemap when she's not signed into ArcGIS.com? AndrewLike • Show 0 Likes0 Actions jessebelcher Oct 27, 2010 8:29 AMI am having the same problem. It does not matter if i am singed in or not. This is using desktop Editor 10.Like • S

Check with the package publisher for an updated package". However, when you send the same map package to a colleague on the other side of the U.S., error reading he can open it without a hitch. What's going on?!? Well, the behavior might occur if the you're trying to unpack a map or layer package with the My Documents folder redirected to a UNC path. Quite often, the redirection of My Documents is not a change that you have implemented, but instead was changed by default to adhere to a error reading package group policy in an organization. The screenshot below shows properties storing My Documents at \localhostdocuments instead of the default location, C:Documents and SettingsusernameMy DocumentsArcGISPackages. By default, unpacking will always extract the package into your user profile under: XP - C:Documents and SettingsusernameMy DocumentsArcGISPackages Vista and Windows 7 - C:UsersusernameDocumentsArcGISPackages If your My Documents folder is mapped to a UNC path, the ArcGISfilehander that is used to unpack the package will not honor the UNC path and therefore, will fail to open the package. The workaround for this issue is to modify the package location options to specify a local folder to unpack the file in the ArcGISFileHandler.exe at C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesArcGISbin. You can also Map the UNC path to a network drive and change the location of the My Documents folder to that mapped network drive. Doing this, you can pack as many layer or map packages as you want and will be able to open them without any errors.
