She tries to add data from ArcGIS online from ArcMap (v10), clicks on any of the available maps, it appears to load, and then she recieves an error stating "Error Reading Package Contents". She has tried this on several machines on different days. All other students https://geonet.esri.com/thread/13790 are able to open the ArcGIS online layers via ArcMap (v10) with no problems. Any suggestions? Thanks,Christina HupyOutcomesVisibility: ArcGIS Online3086 ViewsLast modified on Oct 4, 2010 6:52 AMTags:onlineContent tagged with onlinearcgis_onlineContent tagged with arcgis_onlineThis content has been marked as final. of the way there. 1) When opening an ArcGIS map package (an .mpk file) be sure to first close ArcMap. If you get the warning "Error Reading Package Contents" a http://www.engr.scu.edu/~emaurer/classes/ceng160_gis/policies_misc.shtml common cause is that ArcGIS is not finding anough disk space to download the basemaps associated with the map. While you may have downloaded the .mpk file to a flash drive or some other directory https://esriaustraliatechblog.wordpress.com/2012/12/11/cannot-access-basemaps-and-arcgis-online-data-or-having-trouble-getting-past-that-flaming-firewall/ with plenty of available space, ArcGIS by default may try to put the some of the information in some other location (like your Z: drive) that does not have much space. You can fix this by error reading opening Windows Explorer and navigating to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\ArcGIS\bin\. Double-click on ArcGISFileHandler.exe as shown below. Specify "Use user specified location" and browse to your flash drive or whatever directory you are working with (and one that has several GB of available space!). 2) You may try to run a tool (like Raster Calculator or Map Algebra) and receive a message saying something about python files not being found: If this error reading package happens, do the following: Once logged in, click on the Window globe icon (where the start button use to be). When the start menu pops up, right click on “Computer” and choose “properties” Choose “Advanced System Settings” Click on “Environment Variables” At the top section box that says “user variables for ‘username’ ” click on “NEW” (they can’t add system variables, only user variables. There are 2 categories). Enter the following: Variable name: PYTHONPATH Variable Value:C:\Apps\Arc_Python27\ArcGIS10.1\Lib\site-packages Click on “OK” Restart ArcMap The problem is caused by multiple python installations existing, and different software looking for different packages. This will need to be updated as ArcGIS and python versions change. If the fix does not work, try logging out of the computer and logging into a fresh session.3) If the ArcGIS software won't start due to failure to find the license server: This usually means the Design Center server with the license file for the software is having problems, or was rebooted and the license server didn't properly restart. When this happens, let the DC people know, by starting a ticket, following this process: go to the engineering web site: http://www.scu.edu/engineering/ click on "Centers and Institutes" and select the "Design Center" click on "Helpdesk" and then "Open a Ticket" for the ArcG
not being able to access Basemaps and data from ArcGIS Online. If you've encountered blank screens trying to access these 2 sources, then read on. … it’s probably a firewall-proxy issue … The first sanity check is to run the ArcGIS Connection Test: File > Sign In > Trouble connecting? > Perform Tests If you’re getting a ‘Failed’ status on the ‘Proxy Server Test’, then the data sources you’re attempting to download imagery from are probably restricted by your organisation’s firewall. If you’re still using v10 then you’ll need to upgrade to at least Service Pack 3 which resolved some proxy issues. But note that v10 reached SP5. If you’re on your own computer or have more access privileges than most these days, then you could try to just turn the proxy off from your internet browser if this doesn’t result in just shutting off from the rest of the world … Otherwise, and most likely, you’ll probably need to approach your friendly IT section and ask them to create exceptions for the sources you’re trying to access. If it looks like it’ll take a while for your IT section to lend a helping hand (they might have restrictions of their own to deal with), then while you’re waiting, you can still access the Basemaps from this site which doesn’t produce the restrictions: http://www.arcgis.com/home/group.html?owner=esri&title=ArcMap%20Basemaps&content=all Another firewall issue could be encountered during the license authorization process: What port is necessary to have opened to authorize ArcGIS License Manager? Port 443 must be open through any customer firewalls so that ArcGIS License Manager can be authorized. http://support.esri.com/en/knowledgebase/techarticles/detail/38200 provides a How To on authorizing ArcGIS License Manager 10 offline (by way of email or file upload) http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/install_guides/license_manager_guide/index.html#//00790000000w000000.htm provides a How To on configuring ArcGIS Desktop 10 through a firewall and is further detailed and explained in the following articles: http://support.esri.com/en/knowledgebase/techarticles/detail/38481 http://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/15385/hardcoding-port-number-in-arcgis-license-manager and http://gisarticles.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=48:test-alia
