Have to uninstall Avast from a notebook that I haven't used much lately. Tonight I found I couldn't update it. It keeps giving me message of "Failed to update. The Avast Service is not running". And the Current version, Release date, and number of definitions are stated as unknown. But in program update part it states program is v6.0.1367. Anyway, went into the Add/Remove part of Windows Control [running XP SP2], and it won't remove the program. Message pops up: "Error reading product data from C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast 5\setup\part-setup-ais-557.vpx. Setup cannot continue". I don't want to 'setup' Avast, I want to remove it and install latest free version. Any suggestions pls, cheers 24-06-2012,07:46 AM #2 Nhashon View Profile View Forum Posts Private Message Senior Member Join Date Aug 2011 Posts 368 Re: can't uninstall Avast To me , avast looks to be corrupt ,I would suggest try using ccleaner , and un install it . 24-06-2012,09:43 AM #3 Nick G View Profile View Forum Posts Private Message Senior Member Join Date Mar 2012 Location Christchurch Posts 2,994 Re: can't uninstall Avast uninstall it using revo uninstaller. The other day I noticed that it was disabled - red X on the icon in the tray. I tried enabling it, and it wouldn't work. I clicked on some more icons and come to find out today my free trial had expired. Earlier, I tried removing the entire thing thru the "add/remove programs"~ it wouldn't allow me to do that. I went to "File Hippo"- a place where you can download free stuff- and downloaded the newest version. When all the smoke cleared, I get a message from windows saying "Avast setup fatal error", and the next line reads "Error reading product data from c:/program files/alwil software/avast5/setup/part-setup_ais-557-vpx" So, it's setting there disabled, undeletable, and worrying me. This is the condensed version of the story. I got mad a few times in the past cause the computer wasn't running fast enough and ran my hands over all the keys and clicked the mouse a hundred times over and over telling it "if you wanna run all fucked up I'll show you fucked up" and I have no idea what I may have caused, or if I actually had anything to do with it. I had the computer cleaned out by a local comuter shop twice- January and February- because it was acting odd and slow. I didn't get anything in writing with an exact diagnosis, they just said it had some problems and it was repaired..... I have discovered the "restore" function and am able to restore it to January when the gave it the once over. I have done that twice. This runs windows XP and that is the extent of info I can offer..... Repl
